Holly CumminsTIL there's a technical name for why ideas happen in the shower: the "default mode network" is a pattern of brain activity, measurable using fMRI, that happens when we're unfocussed. When the brain goes into idle mode (reduced activity), this part of the brain actually becomes *more* active. What does the default mode network do? Research is ongoing, but part of it definitely seems to be making connections, which is associated with curiosity and creativity.
I have to say, I’m really surprised that my brother hasn’t haunted me yet. Like, it’s really out of character for him.

#introductons Now that I am spending more time here, an introduction: I teach Native American literatures at UMASS. I live in Northampton, MA with my wife, two kiddos, and a black dog. I write and sometimes teach creative nonfiction. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago (the baddest part of town). I am an adoptee in reunion with my birth mother. I am currently writing two books, one about Indigenous archives and the other a memoir. I like to hike and kayak and read. I’m a Gemini.
