The idea that every 20-25 years a different generation with a totally different character comes along originates in a weird book called Generations published by a business consultant and a journalist in 1991. Basically their thesis is that everyone is part of a discrete generation like the baby boomers but even more so, more defined with clearer boundaries. It's pseudoscientific ahistorical nonsense but the business world and politicians loved it so now everyone acts like it's 100% true. #USPol

Wow, Kranzberg's laws of technology are kind of great. I think particularly 1, 2, and 4 are incredibly important to understand, and 1 and 2 are deep and cleverly stated.

1. Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral.

2. Invention is the mother of necessity.

4. Although technology might be a prime element in many public issues, nontechnical factors take precedence in technology-policy decisions.

I hate being stuck shopping on Amazon, and this is both kind of hilarious and representative of one set of reasons why. πŸ˜‚
#ChatGPT never fails to remind me of this passage that Douglas Adams published in 1987 (it's from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency).
2nd Quote (This one is more significant). If you don't like reading images the text is in the alt text, though it's slightly offset from the text in the images for alt text space reasons.

Less than 20% of therapists in the US accept health insurance. Things are really really bad if you need therapy, especially if you're poor. https://ohai.social/@dramypsyd/109736136246031072

I was asked to write about how to afford therapy and I put together what I could and included a bit about calling your reps because US healthcare is a scam and my editor left that bit in I love you @Cmiriam https://theuptake.org/paying-for-therapy-making-mental-health-care-affordable/

Reliance on private platforms for communication isn't really unusual, you communicate where people consume information. What is unusual is the relationship where public entities are treated like they're just any old social media users. TV and radio networks can't legally suspend severe weather alerts. Why can Twitter suspend communication from public services? https://octodon.social/@ethanz/109683937494252761

As Twitter suspends city services running on its infrastructure, maybe the question we should ask is "Why did we trust our services to privately owned platforms in the first place?" Excellent piece by @[email protected] of Bloomberg: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-13/despite-chaos-cities-are-sticking-with-twitter?sref=ndQeXqOs
