Ashibumi reflects the beginning of the author’s Kyudo journey. Starting in Northern California within the Zen-influenced Shibata system, the practice emphasized inner development. Moving to Japan required transitioning to the Federation style of Kyudo, revealing cultural differences and unexpected politics. Several difficult encounters with teachers and dojos, author eventually found a sensei willing to teach him, setting the true beginning of his long road in Kyudo .

In this beginning step of the journey, I reflect on how my Kyudo path started in Northern California within the Zen-influenced Shibata system, where inner development mattered more than rank.
