President Donald Trump is sending mixed messages about the U.S. war with Iran, and that's raising even more questions about the direction of the conflict and his administration's strategy. Trump says he's considering winding down the war and suggesting other countries could police the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Yet also on Friday, administration officials said the United States was sending more warships and about 2,500 more Marines to the Middle East. And the U.S. is easing sanctions on some Iranian oil that's already at sea, in a move aimed at lowering energy prices. The war remains on an unpredictable path and a credible endgame is unclear.
It's not just vaccines — parents are refusing other routine preventive care for newborns

Doctors across the nation are alarmed that skepticism fueled by rising anti-science sentiment and medical mistrust is increasingly reaching beyond vaccines to other safe and routine care for babies. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that refusals of vitamin K shots rose steeply between 2017 and 2024. Those shots can prevent potentially deadly bleeding. A subsequent research review found that U.S. parents who declined vitamin K shots were 90 times more likely to also refuse the hepatitis B vaccine and an eye ointment that can prevent potentially blinding infections. Pediatricians say these refusals put their youngest patients at grave risk.
Mezcal's popularity is booming in the US. That comes with a growing environmental cost in Mexico

Production of mezcal in Mexico is booming. That is to meet growing demand of the increasingly popular spirit in the United States. The boom in production has both created opportunities for producers, particularly in the state of Oaxaca, and come with environmental costs. One study found that plantations of agave, used to make mezcal, have expanded by over 400% over the past three decades, increasingly replacing forests and farmland with a species of agave known as espadin, used in most commercial mezcal. The loss of trees and vegetation is accelerating soil erosion, reducing the land’s ability to capture carbon and recharge groundwater, creating heat islands in heavily planted areas.
