You CAN find fantasy untouched by hobbit footprints, but you have to go back to BEFORE there were hobbits.
James Branch Cabell's fantasy series 'The Biography of the Life of Manuel' certainly sounds a bit ominous... But it doesn't really roll off the tongue, nor does it scream 'fantasy' to a modern audience.
But these old books are well worth reading if you want to step out of your Tolkien or Romantacy comfort zone.
Especially Figures or Earth and Jurgen.
