Not sure this would help you like it has me, but...
Ask them to pronounce it without the h.
While not quite the same thing, when someone asks on first meeting if they can call John rather than Jonathan, I tell them is okay as long as they don't pronounce the h. (When I routinely used my short name I used "Jon".)
The reaction is often confused enough that they just call me Jonathan rather than think it through.
