A toast to E. Jean Carroll. From all of us who have been sexually assaulted and spoke up. And for those of us who did not speak up.

Ist doch wirklich faszinierend, dass die Klingel immer nur bei Paketdiensten nicht funktioniert, bei allen anderen Besuchen aber schon 🤬🤬🤬

It's really fascinating that the doorbell only ever doesn't work for parcel services, but it does for all other visitors 🤬🤬🤬

It’s Bonn last weekend when thousands of people sang Ode to Joy.

When millions face fuel poverty we must redistribute more income and wealth in this country so that all have a chance of flourishing within it https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/01/23/when-millions-face-fuel-poverty-we-must-redistribute-more-income-and-wealth-in-this-country-so-that-all-have-a-chance-of-flourishing-within-it/. More than 5 million people are in fuel debt or have been disconnected this winter, and yet the Chancellor wants tax cuts that will not help those in most need. Why are our politicians so callous?
The stock market is failing according to the CBI. So why don’t we just let it go?

I posted this on Twitter this morning: https://twitter.com/RichardJMurphy/status/1942861045426516103 My point is serious. The CBI is saying that the situation with regard to the UK stock exchange is getting desperate, because it is losing out to overseas markets and not attracting sufficient business. The question that needs to be asked is, why is that?...

How Rachel Reeves will find more than £50 billion a year for public spending https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/01/24/how-rachel-reeves-will-find-more-than-50-billion-a-year-for-public-spending/. Rachel Reeves is saying almost nothing about her economic plans, but claims money is going to be very tight. But, given falling inflation and interest costs she may have much more to play with than is being suggested by most commentators. She might get to the Treasury at just the right time.

Public borrowing did not fall in December: the ONS just decided we owed no interest on index-linked bonds in the month https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/01/24/public-borrowing-did-not-fall-in-december-the-ons-just-decided-we-owed-no-interest-on-index-linked-bonds-in-the-month/. It was claimed yesterday that government borrowing fell in December. It didn't. Instead, the utterly dubious method the Office for National Statistics uses for estimating UK government interest costs threw up a negative number. And on the basis of that the government is hinting at tax cuts. This is no way to run an economy.

If the Office for Budget Responsibility does not disclose that its forecasts are total nonsense when it knows that they are what is the point of it? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/01/24/if-the-office-for-budget-responsibility-does-not-disclose-that-its-forecasts-are-total-nonsense-when-it-knows-that-they-are-what-is-the-point-of-it/ The OBR knew that the data supplied to it by the government to prepare forecasts last November was total nonsense - but did not say so at the time. Their credibility has been shattered by that admission. And so too has their independence been totally compromised. What a shambles.
