This is the report for the State of Preprints in the Life Sciences, investigating preprinting from 2013-2025 and the likely trends in 2026. The underlying code and figures are available from GitHub. The openrxivR package developed for this project can be downloaded from GitHub. Slides associated with this talk containing individual figures are available here.
In our report on preprinting, we made 7 key recommendations for preprint advocacy across 2026. These are vital to encourage continued adoption and meaningful change.
We're actively seeking funding/collaborations to achieve these together, get in touch if that's you!
Check them out!

In 2025 @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social preprints surpassed 1 billion cumulative views and downloads! 🎉🎉🎉
How many of those did your preprint contribute?
Read more in our report: https://zenodo.org/records/18329972
For evaluated preprints on bioRxiv a significant number are published in eLife.
Is @elife.bsky.social reviewing these preprints again? Or using the reviews from these other services?
(I'd love to know as I can't get that from public data & policies suggest re-reviewing)

There's so much data gone into this. It's been 2 months of solid work!
I hope it's useful to the wider community.
And on the back of this....I'd make a fantastic head of open science/research somewhere.
You'd be getting on of the world leading experts in open science, with strong connections to active researchers. Together we could make your institution the leader in open science in the UK...
Just sayin :)
