I did this painting for my mum

It was her birthday & retirement at the end of last year. She worked tirelessly for the NHS for over 30 years. She’s the most incredible person, and she’s spectacularly weird in all the best ways ♥️

I was approached by Dezeen to write about the metaverse; so I wrote about how digital spaces have social value, but metaverse promises emulate the increasing privatisation of space and obsession with ownership we struggle with in the physical world:

"Metaverses will be the digital equivalent of huge empty cities without character or community"

Digital spaces can create communities but the ownership-obsessed metaverses envisioned by tech companies are depressing and uninspiring, writes Holly Nielsen.

Finally got up the nerve to submit my flash fiction somewhere and it got published!!

You can read the issue here (I’m page 81):

I’ve seen my words published in a number of different ways/mediums at this point, but there’s something particularly special about seeing my fiction published for the first time

Thinking about things I want to do in 2023 outside of career/PhD stuff:
-continue with fitness, maybe get up to 4/5 classes a week
-write more poetry
-learn to code
-continue to teach myself to draw
-spend more time with friends
I finally got up the nerve to submit my first piece of fiction to a literary journal/magazine, and I just got the email that it’s been shortlisted for their flash fiction prize and will be published in their January issue!!! ✨

WIP- I’ve been winding down recently by drawing these house sparrows

The female sparrow is currently better than the male because I found the colours more interesting…

Oh no I should probably do an intro about who I am/what I’m about…
