Two observations from this photo:

I’m watching The Man Who Talked Too Much (1940), in which black actor Napoleon Simpson plays William Lovelace Jackson, a Pullman porter (passenger rail staff, and a typical African American stereotype role in films of the era).
In long shots his palms & fingernails are lighter colored as is normal in dark skinned people, but in closeup we see #blackface makeup on his hands & nails.
Dark makeup was often applied to actors of color, but I’ve never seen it taken to this #racist extreme.
