Mac guy going from retail to IT.
@funnymonkey I don't disagree with the premise about how awful publicly traded companies have become... but didn't Google increase prices in early 2024 as well for similar amounts?
@upgrade it is incorrect that the possible minimum fine for Apple from the EU is 10%... the law reads fine CAN BE UP TO 10% of global revenue. I do not think the EU would go to the max, because frankly at that rate I would pull Apple out and the thousands of Apple jobs and let the grey market take over.
@sixcolors Agreed! I default to Google Maps outside of the US. Although there have been improvements, it is nowhere near Google's coverage. I mean, Google has Street View in the Dominican Republic? I never would have thought it in such a tiny market. Imagine if Apple allowed its loyal users to give direct feedback to maps as Waze does. It may have been a different story, but they still rely on Yelp, which no one uses.
@ianb the DMA text allows for fees by gatekeepers to provide their services at a market price that is “fair" or FRAND. This was added to the law at the last minute without any research or consideration just because it is what they did with telecom. No one knows what the right level of pricing is for any of this and the law gives zero guidance other than “fair.”
@ianb and back on the security part the law allows “proportionate measures to ensure that third-party software applications or software application stores that do not endanger the integrity of the hardware or operating systems.” Both Google and Apple interpreted this reasonably to mean they could still require notarization. So far this is not clear but commission is already grumbling about it.
@ianb They want many messaging services to be interoperable, but neither the officials nor the companies know how to do this securely. At this time, commission officials are learning how messaging services work.
@ianb Definitions do not make the law. This is akin to considering a court judgment on the identification of the parties. On the meat of the matter, for example, the DMA says that gatekeepers like Apple have a security obligation and can take measures to secure their ecosystem but gives zero clues on what is allowed. The EU is already complaining about prices and costs to participants but never specified what would be fair and "non-discriminatory.”
@gerrit exactly. EU knows they cannot compete so they are opening up holes so that their companies can take a part in the action. Unfortunately, they will mostly still suck and it will be small US companies taking the action.😂
@ianb the EU cannot tell you. Have you read the law? It’s not codified like most EU laws, they are principles. The EU decides whether you meet the spirit of the principles or not.
@ianb like every other product they launch. Next year could be three to four months after iOS 18 launches in Sept/Oct so this is a bit of a reach.
