The fact that there is so much argument over whether this game is good or not, is in of itself a GOOD thing. - Lemmy.world

I’ve spent 8 hours in the game so far. At first, the lack of a local map was annoying, until I noticed the kiosks and signs and I realized this was deliberate. Bethesda wants you to explore and is basically saying, “Fuck you, figure it out on your own”. Which, knowing that, is awesome. Brings me back to navigating Balmora in Morrowind for the first time. So this no longer bothers me. It’s so fun to explore. The fast travel system is still a LITTLE annoying but not as much as before. I’m getting used to it. Same with the loading screens. What makes up for all of that is choosing deliberately when to fast travel, and when to use your ship and go through the cuteness. I find that helps balance the immersion and annoyance factor. Overall, I still give this game an 8/10. It’s absolutely fantastic. Better than Fallout 4 but not quite as good as Skyrim. What is so cool though is that if any of you remember, when Fallout 4 came out it was pretty much a collective agreement that the game was disappointing. Not bad, but not good. Now it’s looked upon more positively but still ranked much lower than Skyrim and Oblivion. This fucking game though? I’ve never seen a fan base so split. Not since TLOU Part 2. You got the other half who says it’s freaking fantastic and was everything they wanted, and then the other half who says it’s fucking awful and a disappointment. I think AWFUL is a bit harsh but I can understand the disappointment. But…can we take a minute here? And take a step back? We have a game that has made such an impact for players. That does a great job at showing what different people expect. That’s a GOOD thing. It means Bethesda got a lot right. The fact that it can split people’s opinions and put eachother at their throats. I mean, is that not insane? So I think we should all respect each other’s opinions ultimately, and recognize that even if you personally don’t like it, what a major influence this is creating. Even bug wise, I’ve encountered maybe 10 bugs in my 8 hour playthrough, and they’ve all been very, VERY minor for a Bethesda game. I’ve been thoroughly impressed.

Terrified of Basic training for the National Guard. - Lemmy.world

So, I’m 23. 190lb. Very obviously out of shape. Decided to join the guard mainly for the benefits and knowing they’ll pay for my college and I could help pay for rent while I’m actually in college. Plus I think it would be a great excuse for me to get into shape and quit vaping. Here’s the thing. I’m fucking terrified. And not even at the physical training. Or even the yelling. Because I understand why they yell. What I’m terrified is, of any potential psychological stress. I’ve been known to be a very emotional person. I’m sensitive, right? So in my head I’m thinking, what if I go in and I go insane? Or what if I make it, and I come out as an emotionless asshole? Or what if I end up being MORE angry? It’s the psychological aspect that terrifies me. I fucking hate the stereotypical “be a man, hide your emotions” bullshit. I don’t want to turn into that. I know me, and I’m just really worried if this is gonna break my psyche. Please curb my nerves here.

A love letter to Starfield, and space exploration as a whole.

A love letter to Starfield, and space exploration as a whole. - Lemmy.world

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut and explore the stars. The space shuttles were still in service, and I vividly remember when Atlantis was the last shuttle to land. Ending the Shuttle program. They were dogshit on a technical level, and they terrified me. At least the thought of taking off in one. And yet they were a marvel to my tiny little brain. I still remember going to Kennedy Space Center in Houston and seeing the Saturn V rocket in its glory. Seeing how huge it was, knowing this was what took us to the moon…I was starstruck. Walking all the way from the first stage with it’s 5 (?) F-1 engines, still technically the most powerful rocket engines ever built, all the way to the command and service module…incredible. It felt LONGER than a football field. I still can’t believe humans created something that massive. I remember having this fascination with the solar system, and learning that we lived in a Galaxy full of billions of solar systems and billions of billions of planets…that understanding was mindblowing to me. We know so little about our own origins. The life that very much exists elsewhere that we haven’t found yet. In the grand scheme of it all, we are insignificant in comparison to the scale of the universe. Every baby that has been born, your marriage, your worries or anxiety, wondering what your next meal would be. It’s nothing. Our existence is just a small fraction of the universal timeline. So why not make the effort to expand our own race? Learn more about what it means to be human, in such a large sandbox? We could give ourselves a legacy. And maybe even understand the origins of our own existence, our own universe. I truly hope we do someday. I want us to be greater. And now, in 6 days, I get to play the game I’ve dreamed of playing since I was 10 years old, and have been waiting to play for 5 years. Starfield gives me that dream I’ve always wanted. An extensive, detailed galaxy full of hundreds, if not thousands of planets to explore. Hell we don’t even know how many, as much of them are procedurally generated. (Still not entirely sure if anybody wants to confirm) Each with it’s own background, planetary components such as an earth like atmosphere or a barren wasteland. Or even a gas giant. Hell, even the GRAVITY is impacted. (NO YOU CAN NOT LAND ON GAS GIANTS. SICK OF SEEING PEOPLE ASSUME YOU COULD LAND ON JUPITER.) It’s what I dream of doing to this day. I would drop everything if I could just to get that opportunity. If I could have the opportunity to go to Mars, knowing I would have to stay on the planet and die, I would still go. This is probably the stupidest thing to nerd out on and rant about. I know. It’s quite an overreaction. But this game and Star Citizen, (despite that games flaws and shitty practices) are a glimpse at not just what our current computational technology can do, but what humanity could achieve in reality. Something very important to me. It’s our destiny to be amongst the stars. We’ve managed to land on the Moon, and soon we’re going back. After that, we land on Mars. And after THAT…I truly believe that landing will set a milestone. It will change everything. Maybe not in my lifetime, but we WILL have colonies on other planets within the next 100 years. Bethesda Game Studios has given me the greatest gaming experiences of my entire life. I first played Skyrim after launch in 2011 at my friend’s house. I had to wait a year to buy it on my own as my Mom didn’t wanna spend 60 dollars on it. I immediately fell in love with the RPG elements, the atmosphere, the lore, the world that they had built. Skyrim is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played, and now BGS is taking that formula they know so well, to the stars. This game is a glimpse into the future. And I could not be happier. I don’t care if this is overly long, or maybe it seems like an overly obsessive post over a video game. Either humanity is going to stay stuck here forever, or eventually we will become a space faring civilization. There’s no in-between. Games like this are important for inspiring that dream. One that will become reality. I know there is a lot of speculation and uncertainty regarding this game. I get it. But I don’t believe in negativity and I don’t think this is another NMS. I think Bethesda has a perfectly fine track record and Fallout 76 was simply a fluke. No studio is perfect. That being said, I understand this game won’t be for everyone and that’s fine. But neither was Skyrim, and it’s considered one of the greatest games ever made. 6 days. I’m ready for history.

Starfield is going to get procedural generation right. - Lemmy.world

With less than three weeks left of Starfields release, I thought I’d give my own personal take on what might come of it. I’m a huge space nerd. Love Space games, and love it in real life. KSP is one of my favorite games. No Mans Sky was what I dreamed of, and then on release…it was a mess. Tried to get into it now, and I WANT to like it. It’s clearly had effort put into it. But the core problems are still there. The main one being: Procedural generation. No Mans Sky feels like a mile wide and an inch deep even now. The planets lack variety. It’s pretty much a single biome across the entire system. The outposts look almost the same. Landmarks are the same. Creatures are the same. It makes no sense. Of course, that’s due to the procedural generation. And it shows. I could go on about how the story and side quests are uninteresting and frankly, lazy. But that’s besides the point. Even if it’s a core issue. I would rather have two or three massive, full scale solar systems with a couple of planets that are hand crafted and have a TON of work done to them. With, you know, actual biomes and some dead ones sprinkled in. Thing is, Bethesda has been experimenting with radial quests and procedural generation for over a decade now. They have shown they care about detail and substance. They know what players look for. They’re not gonna implement a half baked system and do what NMS did. Because we all know how that turned out. And to me, it sounds like they clearly believe this system is ready now. After all, while the radial quests in Skyrim were not perfect, (Dark Brotherhood Forever), they were pretty good in moderation. And that was on 7th gen hardware. In any case, we’re still getting a full scale solar system (or at least a couple?) that are in fact, hand crafted. It’s exciting to say the least. So while I don’t think Starfield is going to change the industry, and I fully expect bugs, I do think this is going to be the best example of procedural generation going forward and what it CAN do for future titles. Whether from Bethesda, or other developers. People give a lot of shit to BGS for Fallout 76. But remember this. The game was fixed. And every game before it has been acclaimed. Fallout 4 was a bit disappointing for most and I agree, but I do think the mods made up for it and the combat was a big step up versus Fallout 3. They obviously still know what they’re doing unlike other developers now.

My brother doesn't "believe" in Skyrim modding. What can I show him to convince him? - Lemmy.world

He’s 19, 4 years younger than me. I played Vanilla when it released and started modding when I was 15. He still plays Skyrim now from time to time and honestly, he knows it better than I do. Does glitches, has full ebony armor, etc. Anyway, I’ve been doing some Xbox modding recently and he has this stupid mentality that mods are “retarded” and ruin the feel of the game, and that the flaws of vanilla are what make it good. Even when I’ve said, “Well you gotta run out of content, so what then? Why not mod?” And his response is essentially just, “It’s not made by Bethesda therefore it’s bad, and it’s not canon so it’s equally bad”. I’ve tried showing him the Inigo mod and explained how much better he is than vanilla followers but he just won’t have it. I am at a loss. He is missing out on HUNDREDS of new content.

As in, would you just sorta puke, pass out, and then die as your body shuts down? Or would it genuinely feel painful? Would taking weed help?
