Long-time Unix and Linux admin (and dev)...
@jpopfantasia @JaseEW Depends on the relative security of the protocol, the sw running the service and whether you care if a breach hoses your network.
If you don't care, or have made absolutely certain that all the code is "unbreakable", the go for the lazy portforward.
Else do it right and isolate the box on a real DMZ, and make sure you connect to it "from your inside"... It's truly a no-brainerπŸ˜‰
Oh man, mastodon.rocks really should be renamed... All content and history gone. Sigh. Perhaps thisinstance.blows? Oh well. If the owner get me toots back, it'll be forgiven.
@mike lovely!

@BryanLunduke #LinuxThursday
Why, oh why
is it so hard to buy
a secure CPU?
Yes, I'm asking you!

Where can one find
one of the open kind?
That won't on me spy
through the ME "eye"...

With no spectre to haunt me,
no meltdown to taunt me!
Why, oh why
is it so hard to buy!

@miwilc @DistroJunkie Iwas (ociously) failing to be funny... IoT colourchanging bricks? So ridiculous, you just have to be right!
@miwilc @DistroJunkie Every phone manufacturers produce... They produce "smart" things that are poorly maintained, exist on the internet, by definition are "things" and will eventually become bricks... Every "smart" phone I've had for the last decade or so fit that description..😁

@BryanLunduke Make the least interresting prediction, please: Will 2018 be The Year of the Linux Desktop?

I know my answer(s):
- Who cares, it works for me!
- Linux pretty much owns the server (virtualization), cloud, embedded and IoT markets... So what if Windoze has the desktop?!
... More on request!

@JaseEW @therealmatthartley Ow, not ratpoison... When I had a spat of minimalism, I used to do evilwm. Then went through a slew of wms like openbox, enlightenment, fluxbox... And had a very long period using fvwm2 exclusively. Still love it, but since I'm a sysadm (=lazy the right way) I usually make do with whatever comes with the distroπŸ˜„
@therealmatthartley @JaseEW mind you, Matt asks "best Desktop" not Desktop Environment, so any ol' thing could be construed to fit that bill. So I'm (very) slightly serious... Any collection of applications including a wm might be dubbed a desktop πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚
@JaseEW @therealmatthartley Doesn't count?! Of course it does... As much as all these pretentious DEs doπŸ˜„πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‚
