Interestingly, the book also foreshadows some very contemporary concerns. Towards the end of the book by Desiree, the feminist ex-wife of the American professor Zapp (one of the two protagonists) on what now would be called mansplaining;

PhD defenses are the most gratifying moments of academic life. Here is Dr @KeesmanLaura, with "paranymphs" Floris and Laura, after an excellent defense listening to a proud "promotor" Don Weenink giving the "laudatio", photo taken illicitly by "opponent" Marie Lindegaard in the back bench.
