Discussion at our place about plum rubies. A plum ruby is a plum stone that ends up in stewed plums and therefore in your bowl when you have stewed plums.

I was opining that giving them this pleasant name changes our perceptions from ‘uh, a stone’ to ‘oh, a ruby!’. Interesting psychological effect.

However, Mr Google seems to know nothing about this. I thought I heard the expression as a child. @Lizbeggs55 thinks maybe it was just her family, and I picked it up from her after 40+ years of marriage. Anyone else heard this expression?

Does anyone still use these? For us it’s pull off cover for landfill and put contents straight into recycling.
That moment you realise that the fern tree trunk is actually a collection of trapped souls looking at you with evil intent 🙂.
So, I started a conversation with ChatGPT.

We both (@Lizbeggs55 and me) sit in different lounge chairs when we watch TV. Up until a few years ago we would toss the remote between us if one was leaving. Our aim was never that good, despite years of trying to perfect a soft arc.
After we moved, a new arrangement of furniture meant there was a footstool placed in such a way that we could both reach it. We decided it was easier to instead place the remote there at the all-important moment of changeover.
Because the stool’s only function is now to hold the remote, and it is quite large for this task, it appeared to us that it was on a throne. Also, the two syllables needed to say “remote” seemed too much work, so now we just say “mote”.
The evening therefore may contain the phrase “the mote is on the throne” at various points. This passes for normal at our house.

In 2019 I went to an exhibition of Chinese artefacts from the last several hundred years. In it were these discs, which had some symbolic priestly function which I can no longer remember.
As I waited for my turn directly in front of them, the lady in front of me, there with her two grandchildren, had made a connection over the centuries. “Look” she said “CDs - they look just like CDs”!
I could see enough to see what she meant and was vicariously enjoying that the children would also now make the link - a centuries old artefact looking like something completely modern. This was all shattered in a moment: “Grandma, what’s a CD”?
We bought a new house. For reasons we don’t know, it contained a “red rattler” train carriage (with drivers section) that had been sitting there for 30 years. We loved the house, but what to do about the train?
Well, I’m restoring it. I’m going to convert the interior passenger component to an art studio, while retaining as much of the original as I can. I will restore the drivers cabin to its original state.
I’ve started on the roof. I’m the one in dark clothes.
From the bird site. Sorry.
