A 55-year-old Belgian CEO and a 22-year-old student often buy exactly the same things when they become fathers. Their empathy center in their brain takes control (protection). And both suddenly buy a Volvo and organic vegetables at Bio-Planet. Context determines behavior, not your birth year. Amazon Prime champions this daily. €49 per year for "free" shipping? Our rational brain knows that's nonsense of course. But the Sunk Cost Fallacy already has you in its grip. And look, you're ordering toilet paper at midnight because otherwise you won't get your "investment" back. Jeff Bezos understands that one-click purchase principle like the devil himself. They know perfectly how to activate your impulsive brain circuits before you can act rationally or shout: Wait a minute, do I need this? 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡. Good marketing isn't really about the product. It's about hacking 100,000-year-old brain circuits. John Lewis makes you cry with Christmas ads because they trigger your mirror neurons. You're crying over a penguin on an ice floe while you know it's CGI. Dove doesn't sell soap. They activate your social reward system with body positivity campaigns, read social acceptance. Red Bull doesn't give you wings, but associates cans of sugar water with your fantasy of one day jumping off a cliff with a parachute, read self-actualization. And no, you'll probably never do that. You're sitting in an office in Antwerp/Brussels or wherever. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬. We're all pretty much predictable primates with smartphones and credit cards. With brain wiring that's 100,000 years old making us think sugar and fat are scarce. Use that knowledge. Activate those ancient mechanisms. And sell. Marketing is psychology applied with media budget. Creativity mines that goldmine. I’𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧.
Anxiety is the negative side of having a creative mind. Recorded October 2021 at Savoy Theatre, London. Jimmy's great friend Stuart Goldsmith...
