This is the thing. I teach a cultural anthropology class and I'm talking to students about human relationships to tech, and I take a min to share my own view: if a tech is likely to atrophy a skill that I value having, I don't use it. It's not just about whether we attain convenience; the calculus must also include whether we lose competence.

I know personally both authors; have worked with Peter on a project. He's one of a kind. Great guy. I'm sure that it was he who came up with the idea and the title for this paper.

@tychotithonus aka POINT's client list.

Seriously, all my clients are either a made up word missing a shitload of vowels like INSPYR or a very boring unsearchable word like bread.

@Sempf @tychotithonus NOTHING, however, can beat the majestic idiocy of IBM's rebranding of the AS/400 minicomputer range—a multibillion dollar business—to "System i" in 2006, which kneecapped its discoverability in every search tool ever:

@cstross @Sempf @tychotithonus Dunkin’ Donuts (a massive chain) rebranded as just “Dunkin’” about five years ago, even though donuts are still their main product. When I search my maps app for donuts, Dunkin’ doesn’t appear. Genius.

@adamrice
Whereas even a number of small businesses near me understand the power of search:

I really should have charged for pejorativ.com when it was alive.

Name it with a Pejorativ!

@jrconlin @tychotithonus ooo, I should name my next project "Mongsploydoing!" It's a MongoDB fork that responds to all requests with documentation about deploying itself that you already know.
@tychotithonus obligatory "CURTAINS FOR ZOOSHA?" post
@cjust Ooh, yeah - totally spaced that one, it's definitely a peer of the others. Five Horsepeople, then. 😂
@tychotithonus You know when some anti-commie fuck back in the 2000's, lonvingly, handcraftedly photoshopped supermarket shelves with cans, boxes or somesuch things with plain, boring, black-on-white labels that indicated what was inside those containers and made a macro with "THIS IS THE WORLD THE COMMUNISTS WANT"? Yeah, that is actually what I want now.

@Illuminatus @tychotithonus the local Coop chain in Sweden had products like this in the 80s

@gerikson @Illuminatus @tychotithonus It seemed to be quite common in the 80s - multiple supermarket chains went all-in on "bland label" branding here. "Yellow Pack" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Pack) has remained in the vernacular as meaning "cheap and generic version of a thing".

The rival Superquinn chain had fantastic graphic design on theirs; the brand was called "Thrift" and the packaging was pure black and white, with big chunky balloon lettering.

@dotcolm @gerikson @Illuminatus @tychotithonus Yes. The cult movie Repo Man satirized this. In one scene, Otto pulls a can labelled FOOD out of a refrigerator.
