Blanchette was 87 when I took this photo. She was visiting her son in Portugal from South Africa. When I saw her at a neighborhood street party I had to get her photo. She was gracious and we had a long conversation afterwards about marching with Nelson Mandela, witnessing the end of Apartheid and how much better things were. She said this would be her last visit, her health issues were compounding. This is the first photo I've ever printed, I had prints made for her to take with her, and she said they would be a good end of life photo for her children.
