We've added our Policy on AI Refusal to the Fiction Factory Games website, detailing how we work to avoid usage of LLM AI in our art: https://fictionfactorygames.com/ai.html

Included is a short statement about discontinuing future use of Ren'Py due to the team's ongoing enthusiastic embrace of LLM coding.

Fiction Factory Games - Policy on AI Refusal

It's the opposite of an AI use policy; we refuse to use it.

Update: apparently the RenPy engine has been using AI generated code for an indeterminate amount of time already. I don't know what the cutoff is. Every single project now has AI code.

I don't know what this means for our games moving forward. Our current project may be the last one with RenPy.

Anyone who tells you "AI is everywhere, EVERYONE is using it, ALL devs are using it, it's the future" is begging you to give up, embrace apathy, and validate THEIR views. If refusing 'inevitability' is an uphill fight, so be it. Fiction Factory Games will be the exception that breaks the rule.

Hopefully it'll be reversed. I'm just one lone game dev, I can't influence things much.

I don't care if it's speeding up development, or they're avoiding "vibe coding" by studying the output, or that it's "just code, not art." None of that matters. It still breaks any "100% AI-free" promises an individual game dev could make, me included, if we use any version of RenPy beyond 8.5.2.

Some folks have asked about RenPy switching to AI coding. Here's what I know.

In a March Patreon-only update, the dev announced using LLMs for coding "mundane grunt work" moving forward. So the last version of RenPy with no AI code in it is 8.5.2, available here: https://www.renpy.org/release/8.5.2

After noting my protest of this involuntary AI inclusion I cancelled my Patreon support of RenPy. Since then I have been unable to read any backer-only updates, so I've not heard of any changes to this plan.

Ren'Py 8.5.2

Not to toot our own horn but HOOONK HOONK HONK HOOOONK our games will never use generative AI HONK HONK we aren't even updating RenPy anymore because it embraced AI HOONK HONK always check the disclosure warning on steam before getting excited about a game announcement HONK HONK okay done

🎥 Day 7 - An Interview with Stefan Gagne (Game Developer, Author) - cutiespectives by Jasmin Page

Listening to this was such a delight. I love @Twoflower's games and writing, and the one hour interview went by so quickly. Jasmin and Stefan talk about his writing, @FictionFactoryGames, disability, resistance and of course, the queer community.
I don't want to spoil much more and invite you all to listen to this interview yourselves. The topics discussed can't all be condensed into one simple post.

My personal favourites by Fiction Factory Games are The Shadow Over Cyberspace and Arcade Spirits.

We write words that make games out of words and we are pretty okay!
