Colorado and California age verification bills exempt open source operating systems

Remember all the ruckus with various US states introducing operating-system level age verification laws? Colorado and California thankfully exempt open source.

For the record, if the UK were to ever require OS-level age providing then I will research any means of talking to the respective politicians about it.

Until then, no point thinking about hypotheticals whose evidence hinges on further hypotheticals.

Just remember this: If American laws pass that require such system integration, developers will have no choice but to:

- Deny access to downloads, likely package repositories too, etc. for American users

- Follow the law

or do neither and risk being considered a US criminal.

Your turn, 🇺🇸s.

Instead, let me give you a head start with some of the Republicans and Democrats you should go speak to in person as soon as possible:

AB 1043 Age verification signals: software applications and online services.

...has been trying to do with moderate success so far.

We for example are British, and currently haven't considered OS-level age forms/verification, so it is *not* in our place to be able to speak to American politicians about age laws.

If you don't want Linux to have to deal with age verification, and you are American, go speak with your politicians - come at them with a calm demeanor and challenge their understanding of the consequences, especially for open source, with the facts, much like seemingly only(?) System76...

I was going to make an April Fools post about how Feren OS was *totally* going to add age verification and... nah. I scrapped the joke post and will instead take this time to reiterate how I was going to conclude the post once the bit was done and its sarcastic nature stated.

As a teaser of what's to come, here's an updated version of a mockup shown in the previous post.

As you can see, destructive and suggested buttons are now coloured AND now feature glyphs to make them identifiable regardless of colourblindness or even usage of greyscale.

An update on the upcoming Feren OS releases

So you may have noticed there hasn’t been any new releases since 2025.03, despite the plans to have The Store Update and 10th Anniversary…
