A paper I'm very proud of just got published!

It's the first meaty empirical work I've done on issues I've been thinking about since the start of my PhD. A stab at dealing with what I think are important gaps in HCI UX/Well-being research.

Beyond Intrinsic Motivation: The Role of Autonomous Motivation in User Experience | ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction

Motivation and autonomy are fundamental concepts in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), yet in User Experience (UX) research they have remained surprisingly peripheral. We draw on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to analyse autonomous and non-autonomous ...

“By excluding technological processes from the making of art, we began to discover other processes of a more fundamental order … Oxidation, hydration, carbonisation, and solution (the major processes of rock and mineral disintegration) are four methods that could be turned towards the making of art”

@falkowata Thanks! l'm glad you like it :D
We made a crow today 🐦‍⬛
@pedrolopes thank you! Super proud of the paper :D

Excited to be presenting this work on Thursday at #DIS2024 !

If you are going to be at the conference, it would be great to chat. Drop me a message or grab me if you see me in person!

Thanks for reading! I’m so excited and proud about this paper. It was a huge amount of work, to translate and analyse these poems even before we developed the framework, but very rewarding!
Thanks to my co-authors @dan_bennett and @elisamekler.
We demonstrate the usefulness of the framework by applying it to analyse existing research. We show how the patterns of vocabulary and design concepts bring clarity to analysis, expand design spaces, and support ideation.

This is just a small part of our findings! The paper contains much more, alongside evocative examples which designers can draw upon for inspiration!

Finally, we connect these results to the needs of interaction design, creating a framework to guide thermal affective design.

This provides vocabulary and guiding principles to help designers navigate the complex multisensory landscape of thermal-affective experience.
