Investigative journalism to expose the truth of FanimeCon from publicly available data.
Which is on par with the (slight rumor yet confirmed by lower department staff volunteers for FanimeCon) retaliatory actions Fanime’s board countered against the entire gaming hall staff resigning by pushing to replace it with a ball pit. Only for the idea to be scrapped at the outcry to the still existing staff.
Example of previous posts that the CEO of Fanime posted on their forums in regards to attendance numbers (we are not going to base the comments for the reason they still estimate 2017-2019 attendance, but the comment seems….unprofessional).
Most of the time, they don’t even give estimated numbers to report, citing they “don't even have the numbers because its NOT DEFINED”. Through it is typically calculated by total badgeholders (or if you want to be fancy, define it all out: attendees, staff, vendor, etc)
Now, going back on figuring out why we still only get (though quite inflated as we demonstrated) estimated numbers in attendance, we found this response from the Director of the FanimeCon back in 2011 with the words “YOUR MOM !”….. Your mom indeed… -_-
Enclosed is a redacted screenshot of FanimeCon staff list from the publicly shared document, with sensitive data obscured. We hid random sections of each row in the data to provide evidence of its presence but restrict what details can be taken from the image to protect individuals.
Given how much information was publicly accessible for anyone to see, it could be claimed a possible CCPA (California version of GDPR) infringement. Though the rules are not really enforced for non-profits (....yeah about their non-profit 501(c)(3) status.... Delinquent since 2019).
It looks like after we disclosed our investigative journalism of the data that was publicly exposed, the board member tried to hide the Github Repos we referenced in our findings… It took them…. 4 years to find out… and we knew this would likely happen (see previous posts)
Another document publicly shared by Fanime's board member is a comprehensive staff roster spanning 2012-2019 & includes personal info like birthdates (day, month, year), city/state of residence, division & department of that year to the associated badge ID #FailedByFanime
Checking the State Of CA DOJ Non-Profit Registrant Lookup, the organization is currently delinquent since 2019 and was served with a 60 days notice of “suspension or revocation of registered status” on April 26, 2024
FanimeCon parent organization’s board did not disclose the fraud to its staff (at most some staff has come out saying that they speculated something was fishy) until the lawsuit was made public (as required through court dockets).
