Taking it seriously doesn't mean you can't have fun as well!

Thank you for taking part, we'll ask some questions about you and then how you engage with the contest.

I'm very sad to see that DouzePoints is closing down this month, but many thanks to @MedPlex for setting this place up and keeping it going for as long as he could. It has certainly has helped me familiarise myself with the fediverse, and I'm here to stay.

I guess I'm looking for a new, ideally Eurovision-friendly server though. Any suggestions?

As always, you can rely upon @escinsight to provide thoughtful, level-headed analysis of the results. Well worth 20 minutes of your time (podcast episode). Congratulations to the team on another season of outstanding coverage.

The flip side of having to rise before dawn in Australia to see Eurovision live is that there's an evening repeat, padded out with interviews, etc. SF1 is repeated on the Friday, SF2 on the Saturday, and the GF Sunday evening (i.e. now). The hard core fans are the ones who get up at 5am in order to vote; in the evening the casuals tune in, but some fans hop on the merry-go-round again to see what the rest of the country thought of the show.

When I find some time this week I'll post a run-down on my website on how each of the 37 participating countries went and where to from here.

In the meantime, can I issue a plea to take a deep breath and employ some nuance when discussing the result. One of the reasons I joined Mastodon was because I was sick of the toxicity on Twitter and other social media sites, and I'm disappointed to see echoes of it here. Take it elsewhere, please.

Semi-final results are being populated. First one's up: Finland won, Sweden second. Latvia finished 11th and Malta last.

I'm often disappointed at how skewed the public's vote is. Say what you like about juries, but they usually spread the votes more evenly. There were some countries that really didn't deserve the very low televote they received.

What a contest! Congratulations to Sweden for their record-equaling win, and Loreen for becoming the second person to win it twice. Commiserations to Finland and Käärijä, who looked like he wanted that win badly. In the end though, he did better with the juries than I thought he would. There was always something a bit abrasive about the song and staging that was going to put off some jury members.

My votes were spread across:

Austria 🇦🇹
Lithuania 🇱🇹
Czechia 🇨🇿
Slovenia 🇸🇮

In that order (from most votes to least given).

Why is Australia in #Eurovision?

Initially, Australia was invited as a wild card to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the contest in 2015 and kept being asked to return. Local broadcaster SBS has been screening the show since 1983, and Australia has a large Eurovision fanbase.

Only full members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) can participate without invitation. Many countries in the Middle East and North Africa have broadcasters who are full members, so it’s not a Europe-only contest.
