"Many of us like to ask ourselves, “What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?"

The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now." -Aaron Bushnell

"Every Amazon order starts an invisible Rube Goldberg machine of human suffering which delivers a thing to our doors."

"When the airman was found, he was taken to two MC-130J aircraft that were waiting nearby to exfiltrate him out of the country. But the aircraft malfunctioned, which led to U.S. forces destroying the two disabled planes and four helicopters, the Times reported. The commandos and injured airman were eventually reloaded onto three replacement aircraft, according to the Times."

wtf is this propaganda-filled story coming out of the Trump admin regarding the rescue of the U.S. airman in Iran?

One of many insane quotes from Trump on this:

"The airman had sent a short radio message that said “God is good,” a defense official told Axios. (Trump told the outlet the message said “Power be to God” and that “what he said on the radio sounded like something a Muslim would say.”)"

‘Safe and sound’: How a U.S. Airman Shot Down in Iran Was Rescued From a Mountain Crevice

President Trump called it ‘one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History’.

The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington is a funny and absurd novel about an apocalyptic event narrated by a sweet, smart 92 year old woman who can hardly hear. It feels like a hallucination by the end, but it is very good and surprising. Raises a lot of important questions about the roles we force onto elderly in society.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is a phenomenal read. Set on an island off the coast of Italy during World War 2 where a US Air Force squadron is stationed.
Manages to be repeatedly laugh out loud funny while exploring the madness of war and the lows of human depravity.

At first it seemed too ridiculous, considered giving it up, but by a quarter of the way in I was totally hooked and have been recommending it to everyone who comes in my path since.

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin is a dystopian novel taking place in the distant future, written in ~1921 by the Russian author. Hard to put down and thought provoking. There are many curious echoes between Yevgeny's prediction of this ultra-authoritarian, horrifying society of the future and present day life.

It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, a story written in 1935 imagining a strongman U.S. President coming into power with the help of mass media propaganda.

This book was written at his wife's urging and based on her observations as a reporter in fascist Germany/Italy.

Little has apparently changed since 1935, parts of the story feel as if he is telling the true story of 2016-2025 Donald Trump.

@KimPerales if DOGE had found USAID paid to have a massive TV brought in for video games to any office we would never hear the end of it

Are there any companies in #Ireland or elsewhere looking to hire a data engineer?

Seriously looking to relocate outside of the United States with my husband and son.

Would be thrilled to learn of any company with opportunities for a senior data engineer with a M. Sc. Physics background. Thank you.
