Has your financial media told you that the Fed is losing money? That seems like a big deal to us, but it’s pretty quiet out there. This is highly unusual and has significant economic implications.

After the failure of SVB we cautioned (original article: https://econ-intel.com/bank-failures-solved-or-just-on-hiatus/) that financial data did not support the assertion by multiple regulatory bodies that the banking system was resilient and on a solid foundation.
Since that time, First Republic Bank has also failed. This bank was even larger (by asset value) than Silicon Valley Bank.

The underlying numbers have improved little.

Bank borrowings from the Federal Reserve surrounding the bank failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank.

Shows the Federal Reserve's lending to banks surrounding the time period of the Silicone Valley and Signature Bank failures. On March 8th, the Fed was lending $4.4 billion to banks. The following week, that figure had grown by $140.6 billion and the Fed was lending $145 billion to banks. A week later, March 22nd, the Fed extended another $185.1 billion and was lending $330.2 billion. These figures do not include any lending related to the Paycheck Protection Program.

Fed Losses Take on New Significance Due to Backstopping Bank Failures as of the Half Year Anniversary.

The Fed also has un-realized losses on their books (more than a trillion as of last report) and is losing money. Yes, they can create more money at will, but any such creation will run directly counter to their efforts to fight inflation.

We have made a few posts tracking and discussing that the Federal Reserve is losing money. Obviously, this is a very bizarre outcome. Additionally, it eliminates the funds that the Fed provides to the treasury. How and why is this happening? That and related peculiar accounting procedures are discussed:
