Starting September 2026, Google will require every Android app developer to register centrally, provide government ID, and submit signing key evidence. Apps from unregistered developers will be blocked on all certified devices worldwide. This threatens F-Droid, open-source distribution, and user autonomy.

Keep Android Open
Your phone is about to stop being yours. In September 2026, Google will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with them.
I think we could all use a few
Some people say it's cluttered, but I love my KDE desktop.
Google is locking down Android. This move will negatively affect everyone, and it takes away the notion that Android is open, which is the reason many of us use it. I urge you, dead reader, spread the word. Set this as your pfp, especially if you have a Google account. Show your support.
I am a hobby programmer and dabble in Android sometimes. I also use F-Droid to get many of my apps. Google is trying to take this away from us as they lock down Android apps. They want to take what was once an open platform and turn it into a locked down iOS clone. They will require anyone making an Android app to register in a central database, provide an ID, and pay a fee to Google, no matter how they plan to distribute it. See

I do not normally post about this sort of thing, but I find it prudent to do so, as Google is threatening me. I am an Android and F-Droid user as well as a developer. Google is locking down the once open Android and trying to require government ID and a fee to Google for an app to even work on Android. This is frankly disgusting behavior and should be stopped. There's nothing quite like loading an organ into the back of your truck and driving it 230 miles
