This whole Federation thing is probably the worst thing about Mastodon and one of the biggest reasons why I am really skeptical whether or not it will catch on as a legitimate Twitter alternative. It's way too easy for people to get separated from their friends and way too hard for people to migrate to a new instance to rectify the issue so it just as an extra layer of convolution
