It is clearly time for Western Australians to rethink what it means to be a responsible pet cat owner. Change is well overdue for Western Australia to enable and encourage local cat laws that enable permanent containment for pet cats.

Please share this report with your local government today and ask them what they are going to do NOW about solutions for this important issue. (3/3)

Key findings:

1) very high 74% survey response rate (90% of metro LGAs);
2) 26 LGAs have tried to prevent pet cat roaming via local laws, 7 have tried twice & only 3 were successful;
3) 78% of LGAs would do permanent containment if there was a clear pathway to implementation.

The findings further strengthen a 2019 mandate for permanent cat containment in WA, where 73% of respondents to the government’s own Cat Act review survey stated they supported permanent containment for pet cats. (2/)

We've taken the pulse on on responsible cat ownership across Western Australia. The WA Feral Cat Working Group undertook a survey of all 139 local governments on past attempts, current efforts, and future aspirations by local governments for managing pet cats. A🧵(1/n)

The most concerning part of a 'transition to management' for PSHB is that the full extent of national impacts are not clear for stakeholders, nor is what happens when the transition finishes in 18 months. Eradication is challenging but not impossible.

There are many dangers your cat may face when roaming. With 2 in 3 cat owners having lost a cat to a roaming related accident, many people are already making the choice to keep their cats contained. Congratulations #RSPCAVictoria, what a superb initiative! 👏

I'm looking forward to seeing the data roll in from our new rain sensors! Coming out of a collaboration with the #InnovateIOT team, these sensors are specifically built to deal with rugged conditions and to not be bothered by leaf litter and other detritus.

Congratulations to the City of Vincent for organising an excellent native plant sale at Birdwood Square. 11,000 plants were sold over the morning! I took the opportunity to get some new plants to fill gaps in my native verge. What a great initiative to help native biodiversity thrive in our suburbs and to help our community embrace the beauty of gardening with native plants.

Progress is coming with permanent containment for pet cats in Western Australia. The Shire of Pingelly have taken a novel approach to preserve wildlife for future generations and to look after pet cats. What politician would try to block an evidence-based law that seeks to save numbats?

Twenty-three local governments have tried and failed to enact cat containment laws. This one thinks it’s got a solution – and it could come just in time.
