@pluralistic I mean obviously it is bad that this is even a possible thing for companies. But even the paper cited https://columbialawreview.org/content/on-algorithmic-wage-discrimination/ seems to suggest this is a thing that *could* happen.
"This is illegal but might be happening because lack of transparency"
"This is legal but wrong and might be happening but we don't know" or
"We caught companies ripping off gig workers this way" - *all three are bad* but if there's evidence of the last I want to share it!
Enjoyed hearing fellow Torontonians @pluralistic and Tim Wu on the Ezra Klein show https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-wrong-with-the-internet-and-how-to-fix-it/id1548604447?i=1000748508591. One nit to pick though. I was horrified that nurse booking apps offered lower wages if their credit ratings indicated they might be desperate. From what I could see in the original report on this https://rooseveltinstitute.org/publications/uber-for-nursing/ it's fairer to say "they could be doing this and nurses have no right to know?" Or is there hard evidence?

Yes it's bad that China is still building coal plants but this does put things into an overall perspective!

In 2022, China invested 11x as much money in renewable power as it did in coal

Coal power investment has fallen by 60% since 2015 – while spending on renewables has nearly doubled

Yes, the "crime" here is that it might "make the kids climate conscious". And if @[email protected] is right each household switching is like driving a gas car 80 miles fewer a year. Not a meaningless amount! https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2023/01/11/xbox-carbon-aware-console-sustainability/

Will we need to expand mining to build a green economy? Absolutely - but @[email protected] suggests it's do-able. Can we then live the same way, just buying EVs instead of fossil fuel cars? No, as @[email protected]. You can believe both! (original tweet 🧵follows)
