I'm hiring new PhD students! If you're thinking of pursuing a PhD or if you have students who are, check out this page to learn a bit more about what it might be like working with me and my colleagues at the University of Maryland (just a stone’s throw from Washington DC) and MPI in Germany.

Why you should work with Dave Levin, security professor at the University of Maryland

@nc2y @zwol
My very first day at my first internship in high school, my boss asked me “do you know Unix?” I said “um I think I’ve heard of her.” 🤦So he sat me down with a terminal and pointed me at some man pages. Nowadays, with the Warp terminal, you can pose English queries (“count the number of lines that have a capital letter”) and its AI will suggest Unix commands.
@cybersecboardrm This classifier can now be used to train better deep fakes. Seems to me that this is a game we are doomed to lose.
Serious question: Has anyone seen any indication that Mu*k is taking seriously the effort to quash bot accounts? I've not heard a peep about this since he took over, and yet according to him the bot problem was so nebulously bad after he got a look under the hood that he didn't want to buy the company. Barring any unannounced action on birdsite's part recently to tame the bots, it seems likely the problem is worse than ever given recent changes. Certainly feels that way.
@pjd
Yes exactly! It forces me to do something I always want to do: take a step back and think not just what the next paper is, but to see how the points become a line. The more excited I get about where that line points, the easier, funner, and typically more successful the grant writing process is. Sometimes the way to get more excited is to bring in some friends!

I was interviewed on the #PacketPushers podcast! We talked about academic life, why I actually kind of like applying for grants, whether AI is “real,” and how I navigated the crossroads I’m sure we’ve all experienced: whether or not to become a professional tuba player. So, what do you think: are tubas real?

Full Stack Journey 072: A Peek Inside The Comp Sci Ivory Tower - Packet Pushers

On today's Full Stack Journey podcast we climb the ivory tower to get a glimpse of academic life in the field of networking and computer science with guest Dave Levin. Dr. Levin is Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on networking and security, including measurement, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and economics.

The guy’s plan to find bots is to see which accounts are still active after he runs the website into the ground.
@ckure @briankrebs I had a similar experience with Reddit about 10 years ago. There was a popular post that a large earthquake happened in Japan. I turned on the news on my tv and there was no mention of it; I thought Reddit was either out of date or making things up. 10 minutes later CNN started to report it.

You should hire Ariana Mirian! She is an amazing security and measurement researcher, a shockingly good Detroit pizza maker—and an even better human being!
