Union Square, 1948

The Union Square Garage was pretty new, built in 1941, and apparently was packed full in 1948. What I don't understand is why all the cars are the same color. #sfhistory #sfmemory

Buffalo Stampede in Golden Gate Park #bikeride
Eureka, C.A. Thayer, Wapama, Alma, 1961
Before they all moved to the Hyde Street Pier, these historic ships were tied up in the Oakland Estuary where my uncle found them. (Now they've all moved to Vallejo... except for the Wapama which was dismantled in Richmond in the early 2000's) #sfhistory
Central Freeway, 1983
It was convenient, but what a blight, fortunately that stub never got added to. Opera Plaza was pretty new and the State PUC building (Van Ness & McAllister) was yet to be built. there are a few more aerial shots around Civic Center in the latest update: https://sfmemory.org/Update/2025-04-16 #sfhistory #sfmemory

SFMemory Update!
340 new old images, a real mixed bag. Some great 1950s Oakland & East Bay Kodachromes, 1980s Trolley festivals, plus some familiar old buildings of course. #sfhistory https://sfmemory.org/Update/2025-04-16
340 Oakland slides - Trolley Festivsls added on Apr 16, 2025 - SF Memory

John Daly Boulevard, 1936

San Francisco's Department of Public Works photographed thousands of sites showing their infrastructure changes, not sure if they did the work here. A remarkable vista of what Westlake looked like once, and still recognizable. #sfmemory

Haight & Ashbury, 1968
What's wrong with this picture? When I got it with a few other tourist snaps I didn't think much of it, but looking closely I can see how things were changing in the neighborhood. (dated 1968 from others in the set) #sfmemory #sfhistory
Carquinez Strait, Sept 1957
A view north from a US Navy Blimp toward construction of Interstate 80 Freeway and the beginning of the parallel span of the Carquinez Bridge (just east of the original 1927 bridge which was replaced in 2003) Abe Doty photo via @footage #sfmemory
Seals Stadium, April 15 1958
First Giants Game in San Francisco (the first Major League game on the west coast)
15 Amateur slides just discovered in the pile. Years ago I was told that the frame for that flower horseshoe was still in the backyard at Pinelli's Flowerland on Clement #sfhistory #sfmemory
