OK, but what if instead of what we did last year, we do the exact opposite? Hear me out: we lay-low for NYE, we *all* wear a mask inside public spaces for a few weeks, and we get our COVID-19 booster. Just a thought.
At a technical level, the way that searchbot crawling directives are issued by Mastodon instances leave *a lot* of room for interpretation. Moreover, they're *very* permissive by default. These screenshots show that at the server- and individual-level, bots are getting the red carpet treatment. There's a big flashing sign that says "Welcome! If you've made it this far, scrape whatever TF you want except these two folders." That's the setting for *every* major server I looked at.
Every. One.
Case in point: I was looking for an example of off-the-shelf AI as a tool for next-gen trolling, and I remembered Liking a Mastodon post earlier today, but I couldn't find it. I searched Google for "chatGPT 240 characters reply guy" 💥 Result #1 (https://xoxo.zone/@andybaio/109604772058225263)
Note that the options menu is disabled, meaning that sign-in is required to get a link to the original post-and yet, Google has it indexed and ready for discovery by anyone in the world. Within 9 hours.
The reality: learning loss and long-term disability will become increasingly common as the prevalence of long COVID rises.
Just because the CDC isn't reporting cases accurately- and the press isn't holding them to account- that doesn't mean people aren't getting sick.
