Advice for Linux media center - sh.itjust.works
Hi everyone! In the next year or so, my project is to rip all my blurays and put
them on a 4tb external USB hard drive. I’ve already done it for all my DVDs, but
I still have to buy an external bluray player in order to finish the job. My
budget for the bluray player is CHF 75.- used, so around 75$. All this is done
through MakeMKV. Then, I’d want to have a small Linux PC that I’d use as a media
center. My budget is under CHF 100.-, so around 100$. I’ve noticed that you can
get 2014 MacMinis with i5 or i7 for that budget, but I’m open to any other
brand. What I’d want the PC to do: -Play all my movies stored on my external USB
drive. I don’t think I have 4k movies, but I can’t exclude that some of my
Blurays will be 4k in the future -Display my family pictures and videos stored
on kDrive (a cloud by Infomaniak) through Firefox and WebDav -Play my music on
my Yamaha Amplifier through Firefox and Tidal -Use the wifi for updates, browser
based stuff, etc… The PC would probably not be used for anything else for now,
but it needs to be able to become a desktop PC again in the future if needed.
I’d want to operate the PC with a bluetooth mouse and only have to use a
keyboard from time to time. I’ve heard about Jellyfin, Libelec, Kodi and other
stuff but I don’t really know what they are. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Same distribution, but different DE. Wifi works in one, but not in the other. - sh.itjust.works
Hi everyone! I’ve been enjoying Gnome for the last 5 years, mainly in Fedora
Workstation. Lately, I’ve been feeling a scratch to try something else after a
few annoyances with notifications or the file manager. I’ve also been using KDE
in Steam OS on my Steam Deck, but something doesn’t feel right even if I managed
to reproduce my Gnome workflow in it. I thought that Cosmic could be the perfect
middle ground and I wanted to dual boot it alongside Fedora Workstation on my
second computer, an upgraded Mac Book Pro from 2012. As I enjoy Fedora, I
downloaded the Fedora Cosmic Atomic version. On this computer, you normally have
to enable RPM fusion to get the broadcom drivers for the wifi. I followed the
instructions related to os-tree based systems with no luck. Then I thought,
let’s just download the normal Fedora Cosmic as I don’t need an immutable distro
and the commands should be the same as for Workstation. Despite, managing to get
the Broadcom drivers, I never managed to get the wifi working in Fedora Cosmic.
I might be stupid, but I don’t understand why as it’s the same distro and just a
different DE. Doe’s anyone have an explanation? It might be a sign that I should
just live with the minor annoyances I get in Gnome, but some things looked
really good in Cosmic and I’d love to dual boot it for a while…
No achievements in Wolfenstein the New Order through Heroic

No achievements in Wolfenstein the New Order through Heroic - sh.itjust.works
Hi everyone! Due to my Playstation 4 version of Wolfenstein the New Order being
now only in german after an update, I sold the game and bought again to replay
it on my Steam Deck through Heroic. I’m enjoying the game as everything works
perfectly except that I’m getting no achievements even if my playtime is
synchronized to GOG. Apparently, even on Windows people are having this problem:
https://www.gog.com/forum/wolfenstein_series/new_order_achievements_broken/?search=achievements
[https://www.gog.com/forum/wolfenstein_series/new_order_achievements_broken/?search=achievements]
So in hope of an Idea, I’m turning to Lemmy even if I don’t have much hope.
Apparently downgrading the version of the game could help, but I can’t get a
confirmation if it would mean starting from scratch again or not. I’m running
the 1.0.0.2 hotfix version of the game.

Kwin workspace rules not working and Evolution not remembering passwords in KDE - sh.itjust.works
Hi everyone! I’m a 90% satisfied Gnome user only looking for more customization
possibilities. I had tried KDE on a VM, but, since I have a Steam Deck (Steam
OS), I thought I should try to fully make it usable as a computer in case I’d
need it. I kind of managed to recreate the Gnome workflow where you switch
between workspaces. I’ve also set up kwin rules telling, for instance, Firefox
to open on workspace No 2 on startup. I don’t know why, but that doesn’t work
for 2 of my main applications. I use Evolution mail and it always starts on the
wrong workspace. Same for OnlyOffice, but for this one I can’t even create a
kwin rule as I don’t have that option while right clicking on the far right of
the app. I wanted to take a screenshot of the issue, but Spectacle doesn’t allow
me to take a screenshot when the right click menu is open… Also, Evolution can’t
seem to remember my passwords despite allowing them to be saved in the keyring.
Since I have around 10 calendars, it means entering 10 passwords at startup…
Suffice to say that my experience with KDE isn’t great so far even if I’d really
want to try it a bit more… Does anyone knows how to solve these issues? Thanks
in advance!

Mass Effect is one of the greatest games ever and EA makes good games - sh.itjust.works
Hi everyone! I’ve been replaying the Mass Effect games and I’m really impressed
by how great they are. Someway, even if I really enjoyed them back in the days
on my Playstation 3, I feel like it’s now even better now that I get to enjoy
the Legendary Edition on my Steam Deck. I think I might have been too young to
appreciate all the work that goes into creating such a universe and how you can
just spend time by listening to conversations, look at the world around you and
get involved in all the politics and news. I was also surprized at how
integrated the DLC’s are. The other day I started playing the Omega freeing
mission in Mass Effect 3, just to discover after a few hours that it’s not part
of the main game. Since I don’t remember my first playthrough, it makes me
wonder how many of the DLC’s I’ve played for now. I’m around 20 hours in Mass
Effect 3 and I hope the end is as good as I remember (even if I know that some
people where not happy with the end). For now, I don’t even know if there are
many endings, so no spoiler please. All of this, just to say that you shoud get
the game if you haven’t played it yet. I got it for around 10$ if I remember,
but it’d would even still be worth it at the 69$ they are asking for it these
days) I can lower the TDP to 7/ 30 FPS and the game still looks gorgeous on the
Deck’s small screen. I feel like it’s even better than Cyberpunk 2077 while
still filling my need of a huge world with a lot of tech stuff and background
stories. Some people are complaining about the always online requirement, but I
think you can even avoid it. I also wanted to add that EA has a bad reputation
on Lemmy (and it’s probably justified in a way and not gonna get better soon),
but they’ve created some great games over the years. Here is a list of the ones
I’ve enjoyed just as a reminder: -Dead Space 1-3 (3 is great despite everything
people are saying) -Battlefield 1 -Star Wars Jedi Survivor and fallen order
-Need For Speed Shift 1-2

Sometimes, my computer is very slow and sometimes really fast. Fedora 43. - sh.itjust.works
Hi everyone! My daily driver is a Surface Go 1 running Fedora with 8GB of ram
and 128GB of storage. It is always hooked up to a Philips 273B screen via USB-C.
Most of the time, it is really fast and a perfect tiny Linux and Gnome machine
easily hookable to a big screen for when you’re not travelling. However,
sometimes, after installing updates but maybe not always, it is slow as hell.
Sometimes, detaching the Surface from the big screen and hooking it again,
solves the issue, but not always. It is a behavior I already had when I was
using Ubuntu and I’ve had on Fedora since version 36. Here are some useful
printscreens from HTOP and the ressource management system: high cpu usage

low cpu usage

I thought that maybe installing the Surface kernel would stop the issue, but it
didn’t… Sometimes it’s annoying enough to make me just want to use my wife’s
MacBook Pro 2012 running Fedora as a daily driver but the form factor is less
practical. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi everyone! Around a year ago I went through many steps (Boxtron and other
stuff) to get Earthworm Jim running on my Steam Deck just to discover afterward
that these were not needed in the end. I think I’ve uninstalled everything but I
can’t get rid of two error messages I’m getting every time I switch to desktop
mode. One of them says: Game not recogninzed as DOSBox compatible
[https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/d926995c-613b-4048-b365-b12e4f4a12bb.png]

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11435 I’ve found two
conversations on github about these, but I have to admit I don’t really know
what they’re talking about and what to do. I wouldn’t want to break my system to
solve these errors as these are just minor inconveniences without any influence
on functionnality. Could someone guide me on what to do? Thanks in advance
