@Chawarma Thanks! I think I have it mostly sorted out, but when someone just googles Mastodon and tries to sign up, that is not an easy experience at all. Before you can even create an account you have to make a decision that you really don't know what the impact will be. I ended up finding an invite that @ChrisPirillo posted. For all I know I'm now part of some 3D Printing cult server... but that wouldn't be so bad lol.
