COVID Consciousness as a Subculture
The empowerment found in looking after each other is the empowerment of all good movements – there is no need, ever, to leave a single soul behind. Good movements sustain themselves with big imaginations for good now’s and good futures [.] I don’t want to go back in time, I know we can do better, and that a good future is coming. We will make it so.
I've started making decorative mask chains recently! Here are two I completed for myself at a workshop where I learned the basics of the craft. I'm fortunate to live in an area that has pockets of COVID-conscious folks organizing such events.
Mask chain making is a fun hobby I plan to continue. It's always nice to get complimented by strangers on something you made yourself! I'd like to get to a point where I can make them for friends (and maybe folks online?), but I'd want to have a wider variety of charms first.
Since I don't own a mannequin head, Mama Cheetah volunteered to be my model for these glamour shots. I think she's got a real knack for it.

Happy new year! There's a lot of thoughts to be had as we enter year 7 of this pandemic, but I'll start off by focusing on our accomplishments. 2025 was CSF's biggest year yet - just look at our events page to see how we've expanded. Even this deep into the pandemic, interest in what we have to offer has not gone away. All that is thanks to everyone who stepped up to host the panel or volunteered to distribute masks and tests. Thank you all for joining in on this mission. Let's keep it going, and I hope to see even more people helping out at even more events in the new year.
On New Year's Day 2023, our Telegram chat started with just a handful of friends. In 2025, we crossed 200 members. This community has given me a lot of hope, motivation, and strength to keep going when things have seemed bleak, and I have learned so many things from all of you. I truly see us as a treasure within our furry fandom. May we continue to learn, grow, and build each other up as we continue the struggle for public health and against preventable illness in our communities.
Out in the wider world, 2025 has been difficult, both in terms of public health and in terms of the wider political situation, but not without cause for hope. Federal health agencies have been captured by anti-vaxxers, but they have not succeeded in all of their efforts, and states have expressed willingness to resist. Vaccine access has run into obstacles but, at least in the us, has not been eliminated. Masking continues to be denigrated or ignored by authority voices, and yet there is a growing awareness that people are not as healthy as they were pre-2020, and that wearing a mask is in fact an option that works. Let's continue to do our part to try to turn the tide, to be ready with our knowledge and resources when the need arises.
Thank you all for being here. I wish you good health and solidarity in the new year.
