Their attitude to self diagnosis is a good one to check. Also:

How do they filter for an adult person masking, or having learnt skills as an adult that they didn't have as a child?

Do you need to provide testimony from your family / your parents, and how do they handle family dinamics such as a parent who is unwilling or unable to recognise autistic traits?

Do they only provide you with the diagnosis for Autism, or does your evaluation include more detailed feedback such as what co morbidities / challenges / sensitivities you have?

How aware are they of gender-based bias in assessing autism?

@exme @seanwithwords @Zumbador @f1337 I have a friend who sends me voice memos because she needs to process to a listener. If you need to to that (and if it's available here) feel free to dm me voice memos!!!

@exme @seanwithwords @Zumbador @f1337 oh I do that too! my husband doesn't mind as long as I identify what I'm doing. Otherwise he thinks I'm super stressed. So I will say I need to process this appointment, are you available? My son is available for it if he's playing video games and can kind of listen.
But today everyone was busy and I processed out loud to myself, and it worked the exact same! So I'm going to try that more.

Also, you are not a burden. 💚

Yeah and deep work is HARD work and the product of it isn't always visible and can take a while.

@seanwithwords @Zumbador @f1337 @actuallyautistic Yeah that makes so much sense regarding the big stuff. I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with that. For now, I name it "that anger is huge and is from past things" . Just takes the boogyman aspect of it out just enough to sometimes avoid it taking the driver seat. But I am just starting EMDR with my therapist and hoping that can help move some of the stuck stuff. I'll keep you posted :)

I love this so much! Thanks for sharing. I might start drawing mine too. Sometimes I think getting to the core of things doesn't always involve words...that's a whole other step.

I'm a writer of Fiction, (fantasy and science fiction).

I get frustrated because writing is essential for my mental health, it just makes me feel so good. But it's so cerebral and hard work, so difficult to do when I'm in a bad mental health place.

I find talking aloud can perform the same function as journalling, it ticks some of the same boxes of finding ways to communicate as clearly as possible (which is always a fascinating challenge).

More recently I've been drawing my mental state which also works well as visual expression is both more precise and more ambiguous.

I've been posting my drawings at @zumbador

@exme @seanwithwords @Zumbador @f1337 Yeah that makes sense! Did you find something that worked as a replacement to process your thoughts (voice memo?) or just do it differently?

@seanwithwords @Zumbador @f1337 @actuallyautistic ... happening to try to change it. Without my meltdowns, I would not have that release (which is a major reset for me). I want to have them in a way that supports me though and that works for my family.

We are all different (of course) and I love that you're exploring what's working and isn't working for you.
