First day of "Intro to Soc"! Before we get into Durkheim, Du Bois, Fanon, Marx, Weber, etc. I wanted to show them what sociologists look like today. This is definitely my favorite slide...

The restroom stall graffiti in the Vassar main library is so wholesome. It includes: a Mary Oliver quote, students sharing their life goals, and encouragement to poop.
Taking ChatGPT for a test drive (entering in all my essay prompts) as I prep for the new semester. Here is what I have learned so far... and it could be a good thing for early career scholars.
While ChatGPT can write a passable paper discussing the works of major theorists & scholars. It is bad at engaging with newer and/or less popular works. Maybe this will incentivize more of us to assign articles & books by early career scholars?
It really pisses me off when grad programs & fellowships want diversity statements from my students, asking how their minoritized status will “contribute” to the program. UH, better question, what are you going to do for my students?
@wrigleyfield bahahahah the syllabus right now is a disorganized list of books, articles, links, and notes like “find that photos series you came across a few years ago.”

As a reviewer, in addition to substantive comments and suggestions, I also include light copyediting. But sometimes a paper is so poorly written it becomes a challenge to evaluate the research. It seems unfair to outright reject... but I need it re-written. What would do you do?
