Catching up on 2024 reading?

I wrote a story this year that I truly believe is something special. It is the most challenging thing I've ever attempted, and I'm proud of how it came out. I'd be honored if you consider it for your award ballots.

This is our story, simplified: Life. Loss. Transformation. Love. Death. Iteration. The first time you get our message, you only / find one thread. It mimics your language in / its simplest form, a single strand of words / laid end to end. You will have to work hard if / you want to understand us properly. You / must learn to hold more than one thread of / language simultaneously in your mind.

This is a message to the universe and a SF story and a poem all at the same time 🀯

Obsessed with thinking about doing a live reading

It would have to have two readers

or a queue of readers, with readers 1 & 3 reading the "chorus" before R1 sits down & queue pops

The original version of the story has a fair bit of formatting trickery, so we have also created an accessible version for screen readers, which you can find here:

{Because this story encodes a great deal of information in complex formatting, descriptive passages like this, enclosed in curly brackets, have been added to help screenreaders and other accessibility devices make sense of the formatting for readers.} Worlds pop into existence, composed by clicking keyboards or in spraying foam on waves of thought; tucked away […]

And really, how better to explore the question of what it means to collaborate than by writing a collaboration?
This novelette was a blast to write, with interwoven worlds, poetry and mirrors, muses and anti-muses, wine and kittens. There are robots, bored gods, and art that cannot quite be appreciated by human minds. I even got to try my hand at some digital calligraphy to create an ensō.

Catching up on your reading? My year-end post is a short one as I only had one piece out this year:

"Collaboration?" is a 7550-word novelette, co-written with
@kyliu99. It appeared in the Jan/Feb 2023 issue of
@UncannyMagazine.

A screen reader- and accessibility device-friendly version is located in this link here.   Worlds pop into existence, composed by clicking keyboards or in spraying foam on waves of thought; tucked away in spells, algorithms, entangled particles, recipes; evoked […]
