It's James Bedford Day! On January 12, 1967, James Bedford, Cal Professor of Psychology, died of cancer and became the first person to be cryogenically frozen in the hope of future revival. Cryogenics advocates mark today in his honor.

Legendary Cal Football Coach Andy Smith died January 8, 1926 at age 42, after contracting pneumonia on a visit to Philadelphia. He led Cal Football to a 76-16-7 record, 5 straight undefeated seasons (1920-24) and 4 National Championships. Photos: service for Andy Smith at Memorial Stadium.

Happy Birthday to Jann Wenner, Cal Class of 1967. He was founder and publisher of Rolling Stone magazine and a founder of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He was involved in the Free Speech Movement at Cal and wrote a column for The Daily Californian called "Something's Happening."
Robert Edgren studied art at Cal and became a notable sportswriter, able to illustrate articles with his own drawings - a particularly valuable skill in the era before newspapers were able to publish photographs.
Robert W. Edgren, Class of 1896, was born January 7, 1874. He was Cal's first Olympic athlete, competing in discus & shot put at the 1906 Athens Olympics, and was part of the 1895 track team, the first West Coast sports team to compete on the East Coast - with astonishing success.
Adolph Miller, Cal Class of 1887 and Professor of Economics, was born January 7, 1866. He became one of the 12 original Governors of the Federal Reserve in 1914 (the only economist in the group). He was a major benefactor of UC Berkeley, endowing the Miller Institute for pure science research.
Kenneth Pitzer, Cal Ph.D. 1937, was born January 6, 1914. A distinguished chemist, he was Director of Research for the Atomic Energy Commission, Dean of Cal's College of Chemistry, President of Rice University and . . . President of Leland Stanford Junior University (1969-1971).
Horace Albright, Cal Class of 1912, was born January 5, 1890. He and Stephen Mather (Class of 1887) co-founded the National Park Service in 1916. Albright served as Superintendent of Yellowstone and followed Mather as the second director of the National Park Service (1929-1933).
