Can we discuss TV streaming boxes? - sh.itjust.works
There are so many options on the market, but I feel like they all miss one thing
or another. As my current setup is about to kick the bucket, I’d appreciate some
input on your experiences and thoughts on the future.
Below are my thoughts and opinions, that are completely open to scrutiny!
- The Nvidia Shield (and 2019 Pro) are aging and overpriced. Lacking software
updates shows Nvidia’s priorities on other product lines. Will there be a new
version now that the Switch 2 is launched, or are the possible profits pocket
change for them?
- Apple TV seems to be a great alternative, but it’s a locked down ecosystem.
Tailscale is available here how, which is great, but there is no way to side
load apps AFAIK. I am not giving up ad-free Youtube. Other than that, I see very
few downsides with it.
- Google TV Streamer 4K is basically a Chromecast with more memory, storage and
a slight bump to the CPU. It does finally support AV1, but lacks support for
many audio codecs and several relatively common DV-profiles. It has also more
than doubled in price.
- We don’t have Amazon, so I know very little about the Firestick, but I imagine
it would be like the CcwGTV? Probably same with the Roku?
To be fair, I’m looking for something with a bit more snappiness and punch than
a stick for future proofing.
What are your thoughts? Waiting for the Shield 2 Pro? Happy with Apple TV or
Google Streamer?
I wanna know how you play your obviously perfectly legal content on your TV’s,
but it needs to have the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
The server is a N100 NUC, so transcoding is no issue but I prefer not having to
do it for everything.
Cheers!

Floodlights P1S with relay - sh.itjust.works
Finally added some more lights to the P1S. Relay controlled from USB-A port.
Trickier than I thought as the original light seems to be controlled by a NPN
transistor which threw me off when using the 0V from the USB-A. Feel free to ask
if you want to know how to do this yourself without risking burning your board.
Huge upgrade for very little money.

Are OLED monitors worth it without HDR? - sh.itjust.works
I’ve been rocking the original Acer X34 since 2014 and feel like upgrading
again. Specifically the AW34234DWF tickles my fancy, but I’m struggling to
decide whether or not it is worth it on Mint without HDR support.
I’ve only been running Linux for about a year and have gotten quite comfortable
with Mint, but see that I’d need to change distro if I want to use the Plasma
DE, which is the only (?) one with decent HDR support at the moment?
Do any of you run HDR capable monitors in Linux?
If yes: is it worth the purchase even if I stick to SDR mode or would you
recommend re-rolling distro to get support today?
If I change it up, I’m looking at Fedora.
Thanks in advance!
Your recommendation for smart plug - sh.itjust.works
I’m tinkering with our ventilation over-pressure function in combination with an
inline fan I run when 3D printing or soldering, to get the fumes and
particulates out while simultaneously not creating a massive vacuum inside. The
plan is to control it with MQTT from HA to a PLC that controls the ventilation
via RS-485.
Therefore I’m looking for a simple but clean looking smart plug that I can
integrate with HA to let me know when the fan is on (pulling power, actual
wattage is irrelevant) to automatically enable this function.
I know Sonoff makes some, but I always prefer personal advice over random search
results.
Preferably Zigbee or WiFi (offline) as I don’t have any Matter/Z-wave
hub/dongle. Compact design and black would be nice, but not a must. Stability
and ease of setup matters more than added functionality.
Does anyone have any personal experience to share?
I’m grateful if you do. Thanks!
Appologies for the lack of space bewtween sentences… Not sure why that occured.
Best trackers for returning sailor - sh.itjust.works
After a decade of being a law abiding citizen and paying customer of every
streaming service between here and the moon, I’ve given it all up and come back
to the high seas.
It’s all being split up between more and more services with ever growing prices.
If they make it hard to be a customer, I’d rather not be one.
So I grabbed myself a NAS, set up all relevant .ARRs and am torrenting again.
What trackers do you guys with experience recommend?
Are the free ones still good enough or do I need to cry my way into a private
one?
The NAS is running 24/7 so I will be a good seeder, so if anybody has an invite
to a good private tracker I’d be very happy to contribute to it.
Thank you in advance Gentlepeople!
