Thank you everyone for the great input! There are a lot of good points. To respond to two very common questions, I added two FAQs at the bottom of the essay. Summaries:

Q1: Why growth? Isn’t the fediverse great as is? (Yes it is; but without growth it won't fix the problems of Big Social.)

Q2: What about all the other federated platforms? The fediverse is bigger than Mastodon. (Yes it is; but Mastodon had a lucky break, and that's the best shot I see for other platforms to grow right now.)

Glad there is public, legally available flight data on Elon Musk's private jet travel so journalists can do stories like this

Elon Musk’s Private Jet Travels More Than Some of the Richest US Billionaires

Musk's plane has flown the most among some of the richest US billionaires, with the frequency ramping up after he added Twitter to his portfolio of companies.

Okay, people keep telling me to read this NY Mag profile of Emily Bender, and they're right. It's a fantastic read. However, this line is... wrong (or misleading). Everything that ChatGPT trains on is also covered by copyright. The idea that it can't do books because of copyright is just wrong. It can't train based on ebooks, because the ebooks are locked up and not publicly available (without great cost).

Go decline your #TweetBot and/or #Twitterrific refunds before March 28th!

I thought I wouldn't need to do this cuz I had cancelled my annual TweetBot subscription as part of my move off of the bird site, but I guess it didn't expire until after the refund period. Glad I checked!

Thanks to @brentsimmons and @gruber for the reminders! ❤️

I'll just put these two screenshots right here and you can draw your own conclusions

In fact, the Fediverse is now so critical to the tech industry that GitHub rolled out support for Mastodon profiles this month.

That's not a small thing.

Again, if you want to talk to tech people, a Fediverse presence is paramount.

MakeUseOf is writing a lot of articles about Mastodon lately.

I suspect it's because their SEO guy sees a trend and wants a slice of the pie.

But good god, do they get so much stuff wrong.

No, choosing your community server isn't quite that dramatic.

If I was @Gargron, I'd print Elon Musk's tweet and tape it to my office door.

It's the best endorsement of the Fediverse yet.

This is totally insane. They are essentially burning plastic and calling it a “biofuel.” It’s just fuel in another form. 1 out of 4 people who breathe in this poison will get cancer.
