June 2023 update — Now trying out @bonniehonig.bsky.social Twitter a cesspool. Post is good for journalism but not a Theory hub (at least not for me). Mastodon lovely — but somehow not “it” for me….Political theorist, feminist, cultural critic, writing on literature, theory, news, and cinema.

"Chevron unveiled their star witness—Alberto Guerra, a disgraced former Ecuadorian judge removed from the bench for accepting bribes. In a Chicago hotel room, Chevron and Gibson Dunn lawyers rehearsed Guerra for 53 days.

In Kaplan’s court, Guerra claimed that Donziger had approved a “bribe” to an Ecuadorian judge and had written the final court ruling for the judge... No corroborating evidence was ever offered. Guerra later admitted lying about these facts."

How did a lawyer who took on big oil and won end up under house arrest?

Steven Donziger is celebrated by Nobel laureates and international lawyers, but now he's being demonized.

The English have a history of solidarity that remains in spite of everything. This is also a moment to see what has been obvious for a while. The BBC is no more. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/10/world/europe/gary-lineker-tweet-match-of-the-day.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

This book, just out, looks fantastic! Kevin Goodman’s Pathologies of Motion.
An appropriately enthusiastic appreciation of the opus that is Christina Sharpe’s In the Wake https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/art-books-music/a43012829/christina-sharpe-in-the-wake/
Everything Comes Back to Christina Sharpe's In The Wake

Everyone from Jeremy O. Harris to Min Jin Lee to Yaa Gyasi have claimed In the Wake as an influence. Hafizah Augustus Geter traces the ways the seminal work makes waves waves in American culture.

Superb: “FIRST THERE WAS THE FIRE, the smoke billowing infernally into the Appalachian night…A black pillar of fumes took up residence above the town like an inert tornado. At its heart, we learned, was the corpse of a train, fifty cars off the rails. Some of them, it was said, were carrying toxic materials…in East Palestine, Ohio, in this case, a name that hearkened to a different site of devastation a world away https://www.nplusonemag.com/online-only/online-only/it-is-happening-again/
It Is Happening Again | Erik Baker

How many times have we seen this drama play out in the last several decades? Every presidential administration wants to fix America’s “crumbling infrastructure” until they discover the business interests profiting from disrepair.

https://nytletter.com/ Co-sign! NYTimes contributors protest — with receipts! — the Times coverage of trans issues. As is so often the case, the phrase misleads. There are no “trans issues.” The issue is not with trans people. It is with anti-trans people defending the binary at all costs.

KLAIN!
Great interview with Ron Klein —“what Joe Biden brings to this job is wisdom, relationships, character, and determination. And those are kind of nineteen-sixties values that don’t get the credit they deserve in the year 2023. I think that’s unfortunate “ https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-interview/ron-klain-looks-back-on-bidens-first-two-years-as-president
