What's the opposite of Jean de Brissac la Motte?
@alessa_ed Oh, I'd be delighted, thanks!
So I play #CKII in French for reasons. My #EUIV was set to English for other reasons. Apparently CKII exporter only exports a custom country list in the language the game was being played in. Spent a good two hours dorking with game mod files when really PEBKAC...
@alessa_ed Ah, thank you.
@alessa_ed Thank you for this, I had not heard of Lourenço da Silva Mendouça and now I need to read up on this history. "TST" isn't making any sense to me here (with a quick google and check of Wikipedia): I take it to have something to do with colonization but would you mind posting clarification or linking to something if you have time?

I live in a pretty conservative pocket outside of Baltimore with a lot of closeted MAGAs, so I deliberately chose my words to describe my research interests.

Karen: I never knew Africans had pre-TST political relations with anyone.

Spouse: Ohh, tell the story about Lourenço da Silva Mendouça, from Kongo, and how he sued the papal court.

Karen (getting mildly animated): Wow, they never teach this stuff in school.

So then, /2

I take my spouse to aquatherapy. While we're there she'll ask me about some new #AfricanHistory story that I've picked up in my studies. Today, I told her about the work of an #ArtHistorian who discussed the 12thC trade link between West Africa and France. A random woman in the pool started asking curious questions, so I told her my personal interest is in learning more about international diplomatic relations that Medieval Africans had with European and Asian countries. For context, 1/2

Scam Alert!

If you receive an email or response on Mastodon like the following, DO NOT click the link. It is a scam fishing for login details at the very least.

"Mastodon has detected botting malware on your PC that is congesting the Mastodon network. All affected accounts will be suspended within 24 hours unless removed. _https://REDACTEDLINK"

I've seen a few folks join Mastodon and complain that it's too difficult to follow people on other servers, with the cutting and pasting and whatnot. But @bramus has now created a neat Chrome extension (or bookmarklet, if you prefer to go that route) that let's you avoid all that hassle.

I just tested it out... by following @bramus with it!

Realized today that one of the sourcebooks for the #Napoleonic era I grew up using literally doesn't mention Radetzky. #MilHist

@nathanledbetter @julwindhoevel

Yes, thank you, I appreciated the note as to your context. Japan in that period is fascinating and I know too little of it. Getting different perspectives on this terminology is quite interesting.
