NEW 2026 Berkeley Tenants Convention information 🏡

berkeleytenants.org/convention

Are you unable to pay rent or having trouble with your landlord? Our next FREE counseling clinic with tenant attorneys for East Bay tenants is Thursday, January 29 at 3-5pm! The deadline to sign-up is this Sunday, January 25 (i.e. four days beforehand).

If a landlord threatens to evict you for ANY reason, *immediately* email [email protected] with the subject line "I AM BEING EVICTED" for help. Because of extremely unfair legal deadlines for (even blatantly illegal) evictions, it is crucial to react ASAP. Do NOT wait to use our clinic for evictions.

California tenants living outside Alameda and Contra Costa counties should call Tenants Together at 888-495-8020 for counseling (both for responding to evictions and for general assistance).

Berkeley Tenants Union January 29, 2026 Counseling Clinic Intake

**If your landlord threatens to evict you for ANY reason, immediately email [email protected] with the subject line "I AM BEING EVICTED" so we can provide you help ASAP. (California tenants outside Berkeley should call Tenants Together at 888-495-8020.) Because of the extremely unfair legal deadlines for tenants facing evictions, it is crucial for tenants to react very quickly to eviction notices (even for blatantly illegal evictions). Do NOT wait to use our counseling clinic if you are facing an eviction.** The Berkeley Tenants Union (BTU) is proud to regularly offer free legal counseling to all East Bay* tenants. Sign-up for a chance to speak with tenant attorneys about your situation. Counseling will take place from 3pm to 5pm on Thursday, January 29, 2026 by phone. The sign-up form will close at 11:59PM on Sunday, January 25 (i.e. four days before the clinic). However, we only have a very limited number of spots available; priority is always given to BTU members (see below for how to join or renew your dues), followed by sign-up order. You can join BTU/pay your dues at dues.berkeleytenants.org. Dues are a sliding scale of just $12 - $27 per year; however, those who can afford to pay more are strongly encouraged to do so. The attorneys will most likely be calling from blocked numbers; make sure to set your phone to ring and keep it on you at all times during the clinic so you don't miss the attorney's call. Please note that by filling out this form, you consent to being added to BTU's email list. We aim to send only a few emails per month, such as advertising future counseling clinics. The Berkeley Tenants Union is a not-for-profit organization, and we value our members' privacy. Rest assured your information is kept secure. * Our clinics' tenant attorneys are unfortunately only able to assist tenants living in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. If you live in Solano County (or anywhere else in California), we encourage you to call Tenants Together at 888-495-8020 for counseling. NOTE: The Berkeley Tenants Union does NOT assist master tenants with evictions of or disputes with their subtenants. However, master tenants who are having issues with their landlord are welcome to use our services just like any other tenants.

"“While I’m happy that this settlement seems to be halting Greystar’s use of price fixing software like RealPage, I’m worried that (a) settlement of just $7 million for a landlord which rents upwards of 950,000 units across the country is not sufficient to disincentivize other landlords from forming effective cartels in the future,” said Avery Arbaugh, the chair of the Berkeley Tenants Union." https://www.dailycal.org/news/city/law-and-justice/greystar-several-states-reach-7-million-settlement-over-alleged-rent-fixing/article_77a06ee5-75a3-4afc-96fd-d2bdd7e088d6.html

“By embracing tactics from organized labor—including launching multi-building unions, waging prolonged rent strikes and demanding democratic negotiations — TUF-affiliated tenant unions have won unprecedented concessions from landlords. By picking a shared target in Capital Realty, they’re hoping to break new ground by winning improvements for low-income tenants across the firm’s thousands of units nationwide.

But landlords appear to be learning from their counterparts in the workplace, too. As Capital Realty tenants organize, the company has mounted an active opposition effort, even retaining a law firm specializing in anti-union campaigns, according to communications reviewed by In These Times.”

As Tenants Organize, Landlords Embrace Old-School Union-Busting

Tenant union members say they’ve faced threats, surveillance and retaliation from their private equity landlord, which has retained a notorious “union avoidance” firm.
