#Sharkey deployed!, and we are near ready to announce migration!

We have identified one problem at the moment where the mastodonAPI is unfortunately erroring out when used with tools such as Mixpost and Buffer.

We have opened up an issue for this on their gitlab so that it can be addressed at some point but are choosing to move forward without it for now!

We have one final test to do: test migrating w/ this account

After much research and consultation we found that shutting down and starting a new server under the same domain name is not a viable move for us.

Instead, we have purchased a new domain, and will be going through a soft rebrand.

This also means we can setup the new server next month and migrate directly to it before shutting down the original, no temporary server and no waiting period!

We will announce more when we have more info! :3

In preparation of our migration, we will be pausing sign-ups and creator of the month celebrations.

Would love to continue these after the migration! 🥰

More prep work done behind the scenes:
- Temporary mastodon instance created (for upcoming migration)
- Drafted migration plan, nothing concrete yet. (Will announce soon)

To do:
- Get new host to unblock email (for notifications, sign ups etc..)
- Test migration to temp server and from same
- Figure out what the best way to keep everyone updated is DURING the migration.. temporary discord? 🤔
- Once ready, nuke server, prep the environment (OS, reverse proxy, prep S3 storage, test backups)

BakaSocial will be moving to #Sharkey sometime this year.

Migration will involve a temporary shutdown of the server (Like a week or less) in order to clear & use the same domain (baka.social).

There will be a 3 Month shutdown notice (as per our promise to our members) as well as documentation site we are working on now that will make migration much easier!

No action needed today, we will provide plenty of notice! This post is to simply share our plans for the future!

The reality of the situation is that blocking individual accounts is not a viable long term solution here. It's whack a mole.

Blocking whole servers is sometimes appropriate, but there is a risk of blocking innocent users in the process so we want to reduce the amount we block.

Best thing for now, please continue to ignore the spam.

Spam situation continues to evolve. They are now also using DMs, but this scale is unlike anything we saw before

I think this is a very important milestone for the fediverse. This will bring change, but it kind of feels like we don't have a solution within our sights yet

Obviously, please don't join that discord or click links lmao. Even in the world of email phishing/spam, education and awareness has always been the most valuable tool.
