`tmux` alternative with GNU-based license - Lemmy.world

Are there any tmux alternatives with features that are close to, or better than the same? When I’m talking about features, I’m talking about: - client-server session management - good plugin support - advanced copy-paste functionality - advanced window and pane management but with GNU license? screen and dtach aren’t what I’m looking for, because they’re lacking in features. There’s nothing wrong with tmux, and I would like to continue using it with Kakoune, but I want to strengthen my advocacy for software that use GNU license wherever possible.

Where can I read the manga for Paprika? - Lemmy.world

Apologies, but I’m assuming that piracy is not prohibited here. I’m eagerly looking to read Paprika, but I’m not able to find either of the manga versions by Reiji Hagiwara and Eri Sakai. Will I have to rely only on the light-novel scans available on archive.org [http://archive.org]?

[RANT] Dealing with the "assholes" in open source... - Lemmy.world

TL;DR; Reluctant to switch distros because of toxic member - Rude and unhelpful to newbies - Prevents people from participating and makes other users willing to help uncomfortable - Management and moderators have done nothing to address the issue Sorry if the post is a little confusing. English isn’t my first language. Normally, I don’t do posts like these. And please don’t ask me which distro. I don’t want to escalate this, I just want to rant. I didn’t want to post this, but I’m sick of it. I’ve had enough tolerating this, because this is one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m contemplating switching the distro that I’m using. After that changes that Red Hat undertook, and the direction of Fedora, I decided that it was finally the time I switch to a community-based distro. This distro I chose is what most people would call the Arch Linux of 2023, I’d say. This new distro is a niche, and one-of-a-kind, but it’s very popular, because it’s a valid research project of utmost importance. Little did I know that one person, could ruin my entire opinion about a community as being the most horrible, unwelcoming, unsafe and unkind place I’ve ever seen. I’ve faced rude people from Mint, Debian, Fedora and the likes, but this person is the epitome of “asshole”. Let me explain why. The “asshole” in my case is a senior “elitist” maintainer - the stereotypical problem everyone complains about, whom I’ve had the misfortune of meeting. Let’s call them person X. They behave just like the stack-overflow “elitist”. Also, they maintain the most important part of the particular distro I’m using. Are they knowledgeable? Yes. Can they solve most of the issues? Probably. Their responses are almost, always baits actually, to make you lose your composure and to also discourage/prevent others from participating and helping. The first part, I’m okay with, because I’ve maintained calm. But the second, not at all. X is active almost all of the time. Now, that you’d think is a really reliable person you’d say. Except that they’re not. X gives answers to people, and that answer depends on his personal feelings, and a bunch of other personal bias. If it’s a technical subject, you’d see X discuss about that. If it’s a project X does not like, X would say that this project should be thrown out of the repository. If there’s a newbie question, or a question about personal inconveniences in a distro, X will lose their shit. Here’s one particular incident about X, and how he was extremely rude and blunt to a teen lad. The teen lad, being a child, was also rude with the reply. Don’t want to defend the kid, but I can understand that toxic environment was created, and the kid, being a kid, responded in a harsh way. It has been posted somewhere online (I’m not going to share that post here to anyone, again, please don’t ask me). X has previously replied to me, and a bunch of countless other people in a rude manner. About how it started for me, well, that was the first comment I’ve even posted on their chat server about how a certain file was corrupted, and what do I get? Angry comments asking me to explain everything in detail. Well, I never asked for a fix, because the fix was literally to wait for some time and download the newly generated file with newer timestamp. The worst first impression I’ve had about a community, but I convinced myself that I mustn’t be too judgy. As any respectable person would do, I did not reply to X, I did not comment anything about them being an “asshole”. Simply ignored them, and in this case, thankfully, a kind fellow gave me some directions. I’ve been using this distro for about five to six months, I’d say. I’d ask a question, I’d get rude replies from X, and in rare circumstances, X would give proper reply or just wouldn’t respond, which is way better than listening to angry comments. Well, today, I asked a simple question about the experimental stuff used in the distro. I got a really rude answer, with personal opinions I’ve not asked. Again, I did not respond. But I was really furious. I wanted to reply something rude and hurtful back. But I did not. Why exactly am I so done with this community? Because: - X has created a hostile environment for newbie users, who are genuinely looking for help, and this distro is very much undocumented, so you need senior maintainers to help you out - When X replies, other user don’t help the one asking for assistance in fear of being judged for having some opinion - X has enjoyed this power trip for quite some time, and the management, the overall team, especially the moderators have done nothing in their power to make the chat room a safe space. Granted, I did not inform that mods, so part of it is on me. But this person is an active participant, and by active, I mean, they’re online all the time, and they respond, and so this pattern is visible to everyone. So basically, neither was my query answered, I had my mood ruined, and no one else wants to on the fear of being judged. So what if they’re a senior maintainer? Are we allowing bad actors now? People who make community that are against the principles of inclusivity and diversity? Are we now encouraging toxic and hostile eco-chambers filled with a bunch of Linux-bros, because newbies can’t stand next to you? I don’t switch distro often - no, it would be correct to say, I am very loyal to a particular distro for years, and besides, in my opinion, it’s pointless to change distros. But this, I’ve had enough of this shit. I just feel like changing,

Recommendation for a very cheap SBC for kernel development with GNU-compliance in mind?

Recommendation for a very cheap SBC for kernel development with GNU-compliance in mind? - Lemmy.world

Sorry, my question is a little weird, and is related to the hardware side of things. I’ve been really interested in contributing to the Hurd server and the experimental micro/nano kernel. But the issue is that I don’t know anything about kernel or system development. I wanted to start by creating the “Hello world” equivalent of kernel. I’m thinking of learning C17, since I’ve heard that most of the issues with C11 was fixed in C17, and I want to wait for C2x to be a little mature, and also avoid it’s possible pitfalls for now, but I’m also open to trying either of Zig or Vale (not sure if the memory allocation would be a problem). I’ve some across some articles saying that GNU folks are very strict about their hardware as well, and keeping that in mind, I want to use that constraint starting from the time I self-teach myself. Is there any cheap hardware that is in compliance with GNU? How about RISC-V processors? They should be GNU compliant, I assume? Are there any other options? I’m really tight on budget as I’m jobless right now - so my option must be under ₹1k, but I also don’t want to use something like a breadboard because that would be additional money I’ll have to spend. I want a full-blown SBC with very low specifications (RAM in mBs or kBs, single/dual core with very low IPC and frequency) because I have no clue on how to access display from other board without display connectors. I’ve not researched on other architecture, but I’m also okay with openPOWER and other open standards. Here’s a few boards I’ve come across: - Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32C3 [https://in.element14.com/seeed-studio/113991054/development-board-risc-arduino/dp/4060379?st=risc-v] - Sipeed BL808 M1s [https://robu.in/product/sipeed-bl808-m1s-risc-v-module-with-wifi-bt/] - Sipeed Longan Nano [https://robu.in/product/sipeed-longan-nano-risc-v-gd32vf103cbt6-development-board/] - DFRobot Beetle ESP32 – C3 [https://robu.in/product/dfrobot-beetle-esp32-c3-risc-v-core-development-board/] (perhaps the most promising out of the three?) But none of them are in SBC format, and I’m also not sure if either of them have display capabilities for console-like interface. And what about using storage drive? Should I worry about boot interface like BIOS and UEFI?

Has anyone tried setting up Tor/Arti using NixOS?

Has anyone tried setting up Tor/Arti using NixOS? - Lemmy.world

Just a disclaimer - I do not understand Tor very well. I was trying to set up a bridge, but it failed after getting 2℅ bootstrapped. Something to do with general SOCK handshake failure. I also tried setting up relay, but my browser (LibreWolf) won’t work after setting up a SOCK proxy. The bootstrap would however complete by 100%. It says something about waiting for 20 minutes, but still won’t work? I would appreciate it if someone could share their config. And about Arti, is it worth using over Tor?

Why are there no Gen 1 and Gen 2 processors in the 400 and 600 series of Snapdragon and possibly its Mediatek equivalent in today's market?

Why are there no Gen 1 and Gen 2 processors in the 400 and 600 series of Snapdragon and possibly its Mediatek equivalent in today's market? - Lemmy.world

I’ve tried looking for 400 and 600 series Gen 1 and Gen 2 phones, and not a single phone exists in this market that uses them with the exception of a few Redmi Note series phones (they’re still not released, as far as I’m aware of)? For some reason, the processors are all outdated by at least two years old. The latest chip I’ve seen are the 480+ and the 695. I’ve not seen anything newer in the 400 and 600 series. In September 1, 2023 IST (that is tomorrow), Moto will be releasing their Moto G84 with Snapdragon 695, which is just ridiculous, given that this SoC two years older. I am not really aware about the Dimensity processors, but I’m imagining that the same must be happening for those series probably. Has something happened in the phone market that I’m not aware of? Is there still a chip shortage?

Need recommendation for a phone under ₹15k (≈$180)

Need recommendation for a phone under ₹15k (≈$180) - Lemmy.world

TL:DR; should be close to AOSP, under 15k, should be root-able, no Unisoc or Exynos processor, chipset must be released in 2023, but okay with 2022 stuff as well. The screen glue for my realme 5 pro came off, and the ribbon cable snapped. Replacing the screen costs about ₹6-7k, which is ridiculous for a phone that is five years old, given that the phone was about ₹16k when I bought it. I would’ve used this phone for two more years, the battery is just fine, it charges quickly, and everything is snappy about it. Yes, the screen is available for cheap online (~₹1k for fake, ~₹3k for the original screen, plus the screen glue), but I am not really confident about performing a successful repair. Also, I don’t have a drier or a heat gun, so there is no way to access the back panel, which is how I’m supposed to disassemble. I’m forced to use a spare Redmi 9A, which is a very laggy phone. It’s horrible for day to day usage, the phone heats a lot and the cache is so low that when I lock the screen, I lose everything I was working on. The UI is terrible too, and unlike the realme 5 pro, I can’t root this device to install a custom ROM. I wish I didn’t have to contribute to another e-waste, but I’m planning to buy a device under 15k. But this time, I want something that comes with a modern processor (2023 Qualcomm stuff, but I’m open to Mediatek, if their devices are root-friendly, also open to 2022.stuff if there are no choices). I don’t want any Unisoc or Exynos stuff. And I want the vanilla ROM to be as close to AOSP. I don’t care about 5g, but since modern processors come with 5g enabled, I have no choice to avoid it. I was looking under Moto and Nokia, but their devices have some really outdated processors or used Unisoc. Any other recommendations? I’ve not checked out on other brand that use close-to-vanilla-AOSP ROM and is easily root-able. I don’t care about games. I’m a power user, and I want the flexibility to use hardened mobile OS in the future.

I’ve been trying to create a similar web component for my personal portfolio, but I’m not sure what they’re called. Are these called badges? Or are these called cards? The reference webpage I’m looking at is eggsy.xyz [https://eggsy.xyz/].

Why are some gamers so happy about Baldur's Gate 3? - Lemmy.world

Basically the title. Why are so many gaming content creators bashing other modern games and praising this particular title? Is it because it is a proper offline RPG? Or is it because there’s no “greedy” subscription or play-to-win?
