Incredible and unprecedented heat in NE USA with up to 96F at Hartford, Connecticut. This ties its hottest April day on records and it's the highest temperature ever recorded in the 1st half of April in the whole Northeast.
It's currently the hottest spot in USA (as I am writing) twitter.com/ryanhanrahan/s…
The Psychrometrics of Existential Heat

It is time for meteorologists—when reporting on extreme world high temperatures—to publish the concurrent data on relative humidity. The core temperature of the human body is well known to be about…

"Three years ago a UN report predicted global sea levels may rise by more than 3ft by 2100."
On a beach of 1% slope this is a horizontal advance of 300ft.
You will not be leaving your beach house to your grandchildren.
Sea levels are rising more rapidly along Gulf and Southeast Atlantic Coasts than the rest of World

Recent scientific studies show that sea levels along the Gulf Coast and Southeast Atlantic coast South of Cape Hatteras are rising much more rapidly than in other regions of the world. Seas have drastically risen along southern U.S. coast in past...

With all due respect, those of us on Toad (and on Spoutible, Post., Mushroom, et al) are, it seems, preaching to the choir at best, or shouting down a well at worst.
The problem is--unlike at Twitter--that not a broad enough spectrum of us are here.
Missing--with the exception of NPR--the Press (NYTimes, NYPost, WSJ, et al), many politicians (Governors, Senators, Reps.; esp. of the right), many pundits, & many climate folk--deniers or otherwise.
What can be done about this?

This is an article that I hope many people read. Including most of the staff of our major media institutions.

At the New York Times, it’s the comfortable versus the afflicted https://presswatchers.org/2023/02/at-the-new-york-times-its-the-comfortable-versus-the-afflicted/ via @froomkin

At the New York Times, it’s the comfortable versus the afflicted - Press Watch

The dismissive response to a complaint about negative bias in reporting about transgender people reflects an ongoing newsroom rift.

Outstanding analysis.

Press criticism is everywhere. But the industry isn’t listening. https://presswatchers.org/2023/02/press-criticism-is-everywhere-but-the-industry-isnt-listening/ via @froomkin

Press criticism is everywhere. But the industry isn’t listening. - Press Watch

Political reporters at major news organizations are letting right-wing narratives determine their tone and their agenda, and more people are noticing.

“The media’s portrayal of these laws as moves in the ‘culture wars’ is an unconscionable misrepresentation of fascism,” writes Jason Stanley https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/13/african-american-studies-republican-ban-florida
Banning ideas and authors is not a ‘culture war’ – it’s fascism

The media’s framing of measures like Florida’s African American studies ban is a dangerous falsification of reality

The Guardian

The power structure at Fox called it "respecting" the audience when they stoked its false and pathetic belief in a stolen election.

"Showing 'respect' to viewers by actively misinforming them," as Stelter put it, may stop them from raging at you.

But it is not the behavior of a news company. 15/

unfortunate wapo refuses to just come out and say "wokeism" is the latest in a long series of utterly made up things being used by the right to attack the left because the right has nothing to offer https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/02/21/wokeism-republicans-liberals/?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=wp_politics
Republicans use ‘wokeism’ to attack left — but struggle to define it

Conservatives attach the term to a host of policies they oppose, from transgender rights to climate change measures to socially responsible investing.

“Struggle” is the weak journalism euphemism of choice for FAIL. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/02/21/wokeism-republicans-liberals/
