🛠 de DOELEN . Willem Burger Foyer . Rotterdam . 2024

Right in the centre of Rotterdam, a stone’s throw from Rotterdam CS stands one of the city’s iconic buildings. De Doelen: Concert hall, pop podium, conference venue, festival heart, vibrant hotspot and national monument in the heart of Rotterdam.

The colorful paintings of Rotterdam artist Anuli Croon give the public space a special atmosphere and identity. For example, she made murals for the citizenM hotel, for hospitals such as the UMCG in Groningen and the Central Military Hospital in Utrecht, for private places, but also on the street. In her work we often see hands, faces, but also architecture and stylized cityscapes.

Her design for the Willem Burger Foyer adapts to the architecture and function of the space. The mural is monumental and has a powerful influence on the experience of the foyer. The atmosphere of the city is captured in the work: the colours, imagery and representations are unmistakably Rotterdam-esque, just like de Doelen itself.

The painting combines figurative and abstract elements. Sometimes Anuli zooms in on certain details, while at other times she distances herself. This dynamic of enlarging and reducing makes the work a visual experience.

Whereas the painting by Louis van Roode in the Willem Burger Foyer refers to the decade that de Doelen was established in, Tronie & Stad wants to connect de Doelen with the city in a current, contemporary way.
