ANTILLECTUAL 25y! March 11, 2005: Our first ever album release!

We recorded our first full length album Silencing Civilization at the end of 2004, with Menno Bakker at the Bunt Studio in Utrecht. The first serious recording we ever did, with someone we looked up to because Menno had been recording all the bigger Dutch bands; Undeclinable Ambuscade, NRA, Bambix, ao. I remember our friends in Laternpoll recorded with him not long before us and they sounded amazing, and now he was gonna record us! We demo'd 3 songs (later featured on the Waves EP) and recorded everything live on tape, which you can still tell because of the sound and limited dubs. Wick from Bambix even contributed guest vocals on one of the songs!

Our friend Peter Bootsman just started a label, Angry Youth Records, and he offered to release the album. We didn't hesitate and were very excited to be the first full length album on his label! Yvo's partner Suzette created the artwork for the album. In 2009 Shield Recordings offered to release Silencing Civilization on vinyl for the first time. Soon we will run out of physical copies (LPs/CDs) of Silencing Civilization, end of an era?

Right after the release of the album we left for our first Euro tour in a rental van (Engelbarts!), with Peter helping us out behind the wheel and merch. To this day we usually play a song from the album in our set, and people seem disappointed when we don't. For this year's Friends First Fest we have some very special plans with this album (and maybe some other older albums as well?).

ANTILLECTUAL 25y! March 6, 2003: playing with AGAINST ME! in Den Bosch.

This week in 2003 we played with Against Me! at De Overdosis squat in Den Bosch!

Booked by our friend Thomas (who still does a lot of our artwork), it must have been AM!'s first euro tour, as the crowd was still limited, nonetheless we already knew by then they would be going places!
Happy BandCamp Friday!

As you might know BandCamp is the most artist friendly platform. On BandCamp Fridays they even waive their fees and ALL proceeds go to bands/artists. We'd like to point this out once again as it is BandCamp Friday TODAY!

Also, in the spirit of our anniversary: we only have a handful of our first 2 LPs left 🔥🖤

FRIDAY THIRTEEN ROTTERDAM 😈

By popular demand, our first upcoming show will finally bring us back to Rotterdam! We played the legendary Poortgebouw in 2001/2002/2005, Waterfront in 2008 and Baroeg in 2018.

This time De Kleine Opstand invites us to Voorheen Voight with our friends of Video Store and De Dikke Kees on Friday, March 13 🖤🔥
ANTILLECTUAL 25y! March 3, 2008: TESTIMONY release!

On this day in 2008 we released our sophomore album TESTIMONY!
First album with Riekus, last one with Yvo, recorded on tape by Nico van Montfort in Oldenburg. Without sanitary options, we visited the local swimming pool to shower every now and then. Released by Shield, No Reason, Fond Of Life, Infected, Youth Way, Rise Or Rust Records (Europe); Jump Start Records (USA), FastLife Records (JP), Embrace Records (MY).

In 2018 we did a 10y anniversary show, which you can check (audio & video!) on YouTube. It turned out to be our 1.000th show too 🖤🔥 For the anniversary video, LPs (handful left), CDs & stream: https://antillectual.com/testimony

NEW ANTILLECTUEEL DATES!

When we decided to make the ANTILLECTUEEL EP in Dutch we thought it only made sense if we combined it with some shows in the Netherlands. We don't do that too often, so it seemed like a fun exclusive idea! Now that people enjoy the EP and the shows, things are getting a little out of hand! More shows added, all with fun lineups 🖤 🔥

Coming up:
Mar 13 Rotterdam, Voigt. w/ Video Store, De Dikke Kees
Mar 26 Utrecht, Tivoli. w/ Ramones Alive
Apr 01 Arnhem, Willemeen. w/ All Dogs Go To Heaven
Apr 09 Hoofddorp, Cpunt. w/ Pussy Riot
Apr 11 Zwolle, Skroetfest. w/ Skroetbalg, March, State Power, more
Jun 02 Den Haag, PAARD. w/ Nerf Herder

However, a type of shows seems underrepresented; can you tell?

ANTILLECTUAL 25y! February 20, 2004: Our first tour ever!

Our first real tour, meaning multiple shows abroad, was four shows in Italy in February 2004. We played a one-off show in Bremen with an Italian band called Nervi who enjoyed our set and invited us to Italy for 4 shows! Don’t ask me how, but we managed to get three bodies, backline, merch, and personal stuff in a yellow Renault Kangoo. Since Yvo didn’t drive and was skinny, he got to sit in the back with the gear on his lap. It’s a miracle, but I don’t remember getting pulled over or anything bad happening.

The shows were a mixed bag, first one in Torino was in the basement of a squat where melting snow was coming down the walls and we were playing on a sand floor. Our bed was made of old metal barriers attached to the ceiling. One of the other bands playing was Ovo, a legendary experimental noise act, still active to this day as well! The second show was in a big squatted hall in Genova. It was ice cold with the exception of a wood stove, which became my home base for the night.

The third show at Atlantide in Bologna would turn out unforgettable; we were booked to play a festival with louder bands than us, and we got to headline. The venue was located in one of the city’s original city gates. There were seven bands, all louder and substantially more professional than we were, yet we were scheduled to play last since we were foreign. We imagined people wouldn’t enjoy us after all those loud acts, but when we played the place erupted and people even crowd surfed! Thankfully, in the years following we got to play some more amazing shows at Atlantide. Unexpectedly this show turned out to be the highlight of this small Italian tour. The fourth show was at the squat where our friends from Nervi lived; a gigantic villa in a Milano suburb. We played the basement, had a blast and slept in the freezing cold attic.

By all accounts this had been an adventure; driving to... read on at https://antillectual.com/25y
ANTILLECTUAL 25y! February 18, 2025: Whose Streets? Our Streets!

Throwbacks don't always have to go way back, right?! Today 1 year ago we released Whose Streets? Our Streets! Our second to last single and our first single after releasing our album TOGETHER in 2023.

Recorded with 3 other songs by Tim van Doorn at Big Dog Recordings, music video shot during our live set at New Road Music, artwork by Daggers Design.

An up-tempo song we love playing live, dealing with the public space and whether it should only be available to people with money, or simply everyone; a rhetoric question of course...

This song will appear on our next album, next to Post Teens and a bunch of other tracks!
