Husband, father, Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Evertonian. Often not sure in which order though. Sometimes talks sense about the electricity generation sector, likes old power stations (but obviously not the stuff they put out into the environment).

National Grid in the UK doing more demand-side management testing tomorrow morning, looking for 189 MW of reductions.

Also... Captain Jean-Luc Picard is running the National Grid this afternoon. We are in good hands 😀

And in the early hours, the two Drax units and the West Burton unit starts were cancelled. No additional coal on the system today.
In the UK, National Grid issuing startup instructions for Drax units 5 and 6 and West Burton unit 2 (the three coal units providing winter contingency). 1.5 GW of coal generation likely to be on the bars tomorrow together with a further 370 MW possibly coming from the demand reduction service (ie, consumers paid to reduce their consumption.).

Checked up on the local #windenergy factory. All good and helping the UK achieve #netzero.

The analogue version 😃
Going #SingleUseCups free. On the Hinkley Point C construction site we have four main office complexes, North, South, East and, yes, you guessed it, West. Each of these offices has a big catering operation provided by Somerset Larder serving a thirsty and hungry workforce. Since Christmas we now have the choice of the these reusable cups ("Reuse, return but don't put in the bin") or pay 20 pence extra for a single use cup. Given the numbers on site, this is a positive move to reduce waste.

UK electricity market now, very nice. 55 g/kWh CO2. All data visualised by the wonderful https://grid.iamkate.com/ by @kate.

Wind doing all the heavy lifting with over half the demand fed from the UKs wind turbine fleet.

A 15 MW wind turbine. Fifteen thousand kilowatts. That is just amazing. I can remember when turbine technology was pushing half that and thinking we'd be at the limits then but this is simply insane (Picture via Vestas). Gonna need a bigger crane on a boat to build these babies out in the sea 😀

Month by month COP stats - December dragged down by the really cold weather but overall, very pleased with the way our #ASHP has performed.
